Just for stills. Want something built well and reliable. Would consider buying second hand model from good dealer. Ease of down loading a must!!

If you're using it outdoors alot get one with a lithium ion battery as you'll get through loads of normal batteries otherwise. Something like the Canon Ixus may just be in your price rnage and is a top bit of kit.

Going to get one today.......
Have a look at this site
http://www.ukdigital.co.uk/index.htm
or
http://secure.venus.co.uk/dcc/ixus300.html
However, i'm getting a Fuji FinePix 2600 from Dixons/Currys as they have 10% off til the end of today. Beats most prices around

I recently bought a Fuji Finepix 6800 from www.internetcamerasdirect.co.uk for just over £500.Its a great camera and retails at £699.
They were about the best I found for prices, and next day delivery is included as well as other freebies.
Mark
Forgot to say its dead easy to download as it comes with a cradle connected to USB port. All you do is put in in the cradle and turn it on!

I've just got a Canon Ixus V and am well happy with it. Its very compact and I've had good results so far. They are about £400 over here - I got mine for under £300 from America.
Look at this website for some Digital camera reviews. www.dpreview.com
Cheers,
Ian.

There is only one option really, its the bargain of the decade and I shouldnt be telling you all this until I have mine secure in my mits ................. but here goes:-
Minolta S304, 4X OPTICAL Zoom (the one that counts!), 2X Digital Zoom, 3.3MPixels, 16Mb CF card included in pack, Strap, USB cable, runs off 4 AA batteries (no silly EXPENSIVE exotic options!), Photogenetics Software, ArcSoft Photoimpression, mini tripod, free next working day delivery, £2 printing voucher, Additional 64Mb Card, 4 AA re-chargeables and mains charger.
Price???? £381 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yep its true!
NO COMPETITION THIS SIDE OF XMAS
If you want the BEST digicam under £600 however, its got to be the Cannon G2 - at £542 nothing comes close. BUT the Minolta above is very nearly its equal but at a hell of a saving. Forget the Nikon 995 Rubic cube - Good but way overpriced!!

OK I found the Minolta deal. It looks great (as do the online reviews)but why has it been reduced so much in price? I want to go for it but before I do does anyone else have a comment on this topic!

Yes thats the baby Wheelman!!!
£381??? bloody amazing - why so cheap?? market share I reckon!!
The Cannon G2 is at £542'ish so the Minolta wasnt going to sell at £599 in that kind of company - hence the drop of £200 off the RRP
Seems a great camera too!
I am still awaiting mine so dont all go and buy will you?? pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese

Ixus V if you want real-world convenience not a dust gatherer. I take mine everywhere, no problems with size or weight, it comes in extremely useful.
My nikon never sees the light of day now.

I wasted a lot of time with internetcamerasdirect trying to get them to supply me a camera tax free to Switzerland. Their website says they can do it but in practice, they don't want the business.
Nevermind, I used kelkoo.com and found a cheaper supplier anyway.
Checkout nomatica.com
They are a French outfit (based in Toulouse) and supplied my Fuji 6800 for £425 + tax with a 64mb card from order to doorstep in one week.
A colleague at work has since used them for a camcorder and got a similarly good deal and prompt service.
PS. I have no connection with them other than being a satisfied customer.

Got a Minolta s304 sample photo sent to me (thanks Pete ), very impressed with it.
It looks much better than a shot I have which was taken using a Canon Ixus V, which costs around the same.
I am quite tempted to order one up, but I also like the look of the Fuji Finepix 4700 which is available at around the same price.
Anyone have an opinion in comparing these?
Thanks,
Chris

NIKON 775???? took alook at one today. Looks nice ,but very small.... The Minolta feels abit nicer even though its alot bigger.
Got offered same deal in TCR today with a 128mb for same price with the Minolta (kamla ltd)!!
Is it realy necessary to go over 3.5 million pics??

I would argue that 3 megapixels is plenty for most applications; the quality of the optics and sensor become the dominant factor above that, and that's much harder to measure or quantify.
Take a look at http://www.dpreview.com/gallery/canond30_samples1/ - these are sample images taken with a Canon EOS-D30, a 3.1 megapixel digital SLR with a superb large-area sensor. I'd argue that they make a good case for optical quality being more important than number of pixels. These shots blow up to 8x10 easily (with a quick resize and sharpen in Photoshop).
Andy.

I would go for the IXUS... small compact and superb lenses.
A bit more money (like double the budget) and the Canon G2 would be my choice. Heavier and bulkier but thenit is designed to do more than the 'compact' digital cameras.
As always with these things pays you money takes your choice.

Just been out along the canal today with my new Minolta S304 and took some more pics - I have been using the standard quality (the others are economy, fine and super-fine)
I tried all the options and having an image of a tree at the Super-fine (10Mb's!!!!!!!!) resulted in an image on the computer where I could zoom right up to a leaf and actually SEE the veins of the leaf!!
I am TRULY amazed at the quality of this camera!! The reflections in the water defy belief, I have just parted company with my trusty Nikon SLR and I have to say, I havent looked back with sadness - I would also say that 3.3
Million pixels for the average man-in-the-street is adequate. If you want to blow up to A3 size then maybe a 4 million is the one - but when was the last time you wanted an A3 piccy??
I will repeat what I said a few days ago, with more conviction having the item in my hands and having looked at everything in the market - This camera at £338 is a steal. IMHO of course!

Pete,
You've really intrigued me with your S304. I've been searching around trying to choose the right make and model and hadn't even considered the Minolta untill you posted. It seems the more I find out about it the more I want one!! I'll have to wait till after christmas though..... Damned holidays
Is there any chance you could mail me a couple of piccy's as I'm desperate to check out the quality. One thing I wondered is whats it like for size and how long do the batteries last.
Hope you can help and Merry Christmas
Karl
