How ( in easy to understand for a muppet words !!)do I go about sharing the cable modem access to both PCs

Easy!

you will need 3 NICS (Network Cards) in total, 2 in one PC, one in the other. Then simply enable Internet Connection Sharing.

Done!

http://www.practicallynetworked.com Its done in the same way that Windows 2000 is setup.

IF you go the cable modem route, you WILL need a firewall.

At least I mentioned it to him, nothing worse than giving people half what they need eh BTW Zonealarm is a real pain to set up with NAT

Actually seeing as he is running WinXP he can just use the inbuilt F/W..saves a lot of hassle with configuring ZA for LAN broadcasts etc...

Also a firewall should be installed before you have an 'Always On' connection installed...the amount of times i get port scanned etc! I would never drop it!

XP only provides 'half a firewall' I would'nt trust the XP firewall to keep out my toddler.

I don't use The XP firewall because it doesn't block or monitor outgoing traffic. That means that alhough people can't see me, If I get infected with a trojan etc etc It'll go right through the XP firewall without a blip. Zone Alarm blocks it both ways.

Tal - you will need the 3 Cards, and a crossover UTP cable to go between the two PC's.

Zonelarm for Internet connection sharing requires the pro version. this costs .. and it doesn't work with XP

I could do with a firewall for use with XP Pro, as i am sharing three PC's (all XP Pro)and one cable modem. i used to use Zonelaarm Pro, but it won't work now

Anybody any ideas?

Andy

OK techies.....I will be going down this route due to the imposing NTL charges.

I already have 2 PCs on a network connected through a hub. Will I be able to connect the cable modem to the hub and access it from both PCs that way?

Cheers

Cool

Hanslow,
no you can't do it that way, the cable modem from NTL only accepts 1 connection either through the USB or Ethernet port.

I had NTL cable modem connected Thursday and the firewall is up and running. The way I connected this up was to build a pc from the bits I have, currently a p2-350 running a Linux firewall, http://www.smoothwall.org. 2 network cards in the firewall, one for the cable modem, the other goes straight into the hub onto my lan.

Any probs give me a shout.

The other way to do this is to get a 'Cable Gateway' such as the Netgear RT311 (IIRC) It has an onboard DHCP server deals with your NAT and you just plug that into your hub.

Linksys also do a similar product.

Thumbs up

Go for a Netgear RT314 cable router. I think they're about £120 but well worth it.

I have a RT311 with a dual speed 8 port hub, as said before the router issues an IP to all machine connected to it.

Register the router MAC address with support, and jobs a good un

Cheers Phill C

PS and get zonealarm loaded.....
