Default outboard (boat engine)

Well with the lovely weather we've been having, went out on the boat yesterday, great day, but went to try out the small engine and had the trouble of starting it, when i did it conked out after a short time, would it be spark? Then takes a ages before it feels like starting up again. Any ideas guys? think it is a 3hp Yamaha.

I assume its a 2 stroke? - could be a blocked jet on the carb, there easy to strip down, the fuel evaporates over time leaving the pre mix outboard oil which turns in to gunk, how longs it been laid up for? the spark sounds fine as it started firt time round, theres any aeasy test you can do by turning it over with the plug out connected to the ht lead, whilst shorting the plug out againts the powerhead, (with insulated pliers or grips of course)

Check the breather on the fuel tank. Could be getting a vacuum in the tank, then when you leave it for a bit the pressure gradually equalises allowing it to start, untill the vacuum builds up again etc, etc, good luck (take some oars just in case)

First thing to check is the fuel. Is it old, or has it got water in it? Ditch it and get fresh stuff. Then check the plug. After that, try the carb

When you run the small engine, which I assume is a two stroke with petrol oil mix, you are better off to stop it by switching the fuel off and when the engine stops it will have drained the carburettor dry and then there is no fuel left in it to evaporate leaving the oil to block the carburettor jets.

I do this with my small boat engine and it always starts first time when I switch the fuel on again.
