a bit ignorant no?. He was a WC winner for England in '66

or was that a joke relating to how you don't like football?

I don't follow football and I wasn't bourn in 1966 so why on earth would I know who he was? It's a bit like me expecting you to know who "Doug Allen" was when he did something you're not intrested in before you were bourn.

Its case of mistaken Bourn Identity
I mean, the guy has only been a national sporting icon for about 41 years. It's really unfair to expect any red blooded male to have heard of him
I paid my "respects" in the sports section...

In England maybe.

As the webmaster is often at pains to point out, this is an International forum, and not everyone who posts is either English, or gives a toss about an English sporting icon.

For those of us in Scotland, its a bonus. Only 10 (9?) (8?) more to go (unless some of the others have poped their cloggs) and finally, the English media may put 1966 to bed

Not for all of us in Scotland Diablo...a bit harsh my friend

He seemed a true personality by all accounts

However, I agree with the 'media' bit but on this occasion this has nothing to do with this being a sad loss.

At least Scotland are showing an improvement

FIFA Rankings 2005 - 2007

England start out in 8th place in 2005
End up 8th in 2007

Scotland start out in 86th place in 2005
End up 19th in 2007

Complacency eh ?

At least we are going places...............apart from any major tournaments

I'm genuinely surprised people have never heard of him. Ok he wasn't as famous as Bobby Moore or Geoff Hurst perhaps, but still.

Scott, think that's out of order too. The media harping on about it is fair to a point, but it has nothing to do with the continued survival or otherwise of the team members involved, as i'm sure you're well aware. Unnecessary.

In 20-30 years time there won't be a single player in the UK that has been in a world-cup winning team

Jesus Tel, where has everyone's sense of humour gone

I don't actually wish them dead

See - 19 bloody 66 and everyone gets all "misty eyed" and serious

Point proven?

I guess that depends on one's point of view, and the depth of emotion one has in relation to the deceased

Point taken though

Turning it round a bit, I'm genuinely surprised you expect everyone else to know who he was

typical Scots on this thread also the younger generation, even IF you dont particularly *like * footy ( what ARE you a 'Rugger ' fan ) you should STILL have some kind of perception of who famous people are *especially * ones to do with your own nation or the nation you live in.. admittedly the Americans etc that post here might not have a clue who he was, but even upon reading a thread wouldn't one 'Google' to find out more before posting utter crap ?

Just goes to show i suppose, D - different generation and all that. I'm not sure i could name the full 11 from '66 to be honest, but i'd have thought most English people, over the age of 30 or so, would still recognise all the names. Maybe not.

Being only 27 I certainly wasnt around for '66 but I could name the players involved, I suppose being a football fan does help. If they wasnt a football fan I wouldnt expect them to know unless as it was pointed out earlier it was someone like Bobby Moore/Charlton Geoff Hurst etc...

There were 22 in the team Tel, lets not focus on the 11 that made the final match
