There is an old RAF museum on the way to Skegness (name escapes me at the mo) they have a Lancaster that they get out every now and then pull onto the runway and fire the engines up. They run them to about 2/3 of the power and you can be stood no less than 50yds away from them, the sound is amazing

Great to see some tax payers money being spent on something worthwhile
Can't wait to see it at shows in the summer, hopefully doing a flypast alongside Vulcan 558, how long has it been since both of Avros big bombers flew alongside eachother?!?

Did anyone see the awfull coverage on BBC breakfast ?
RAF "Conningsbury"
Opening few minutes about the Battle of Britain and spits/hurricanes. Great planes but the focus should have been on the Lancaster !
Generally very poor disjointed report.

Now thats a sight that makes you proud to be British. My heart skipped a beat watching that,what an awesome aircraft. Really makes you think of the War and the bravery of so many people.

I used to love watching the Lancaster etc of the BBMF whilst I was based at Coningsby (was there for 9 years), was great sitting out in the back yard with a few beers having a bbq whilst they were out and about. Downside was the noise from the ruddy F3's spoiling ya beer!
Oh just noticed on the museum's website.. they now do taxi experience rides in the Lancaster.

Marvellous, this warms my cherries. The memorial airbase you are referring to is East Kirkby. The Lancaster is a particular passion of mine, oh fond memories as a child I had an Uncle who lived at Spilsby and he was in the squadron based at RAF Spilsby, I can't remember the pub nearby but it had atmosphere when I returned about 10 years ago. I love the sound of the Rolls Royce Merlin engine at full chat, as good if not better than a Scoob

, apart from one pax trip in a tonka that is the closest i'll get to flying one. A sad day as well for the RAF, the longest serving sqn is disbanded today. And the mighty feline is now out of service
still stops them taking lighting gantrys down with the occasional low flying trip.

Pah.. don't talk to me about pax trips, mine came up and the med-centre said i was a kilo or so overweight (all them burgers and beer).. told them i'd go take a dump, but they were having none of it

Now that has made my day My dear uncle Harry(RIP uncle Harry) was a co-pilot bomb aimer in a Lancaster, and this is something that will always stay in my heart, None of us will ever know what those guys went thourgh but in my eyes everyone of them is a hero(espcially unlce Harry) RIP unc

No i was on "tremblers" for 6 and half years, now i waste my time in a large hanger, trying to make a silk purse from a sows ear. Mind you i think you did well getting out of the mob, even in 8 years it has changed out of sight.

Did some IT work at RAF Conningsby a couple of years ago for Eurofighter project, and was escorted round the Battle Of Britain hanger. As has been said makes you feel glad to be British, especially when they are taking Spitfires and Hurricanes off. Funny part was a bus load of blue rinsers all waiting at the end of the runway (outside perimeter) with note pads and binoculars....

Ah can't say I knew anyone from up there and only got up there a couple of times for TLT. Am kinda glad I got out when I did, even before I left things were changing and seemingly not for the better.. although at times I still miss it, or rather miss the lads and the banter etc.. too PC out here lol!

Used to do a fair number of deployments at Coningsby and loved to see the BBMF flying occasionally.
I was told that there was a wartime Merlin engine in a small lake somewhere between Donny and S****horpe. It was said you could see a propeller tip showing when the water level dropped in the summer! Up near Sandtoft somewhere.
I am stiil very upset that I missed my chance to fly the Roll Royce Spitfire once through unfortunate circumastances.
Cant believe that the swear filter wont let me write the name of that town near Goole!!!

My dad was stationed at Coningsbury when he retired & lived in Tattershall just next door.The Station Commader let him go up for one last trip in PA474 in 1977. It only lasted an hour but to him was priceless. It's the last entry in his log book.
Another entry in his log is dated 20th Jan 1944 as follows :-
Berlin 7:55 hours night flight
3 fighters (Me 110's)
No ASI (Air Speed Indicator) all the way back from target ~ Bomb doors stuck open ~ Holes in port fin & rudder & large hole in wing.
Landed at Lindholme. Left aircraft for repairs.
He flew 44 missions with 101 Squadron, one being the Nurnberg raid on a moonlit night on 30th March 1944 when 795 Halifax & Lancaster bombers took part & 96 were lost. 7 aircraft out of the 26 from his squadron that went,were shot down.
Brave men, night after night, they kept going back.
Dad's Office for an 8 hour flight. How did they do it?

To read that you'd think they just drove to the office, did a bit, went home
There's no mention of how many hours they all must have spent praying for their bullet & shrapnel ridden metal tube not to fall apart around them, or worse, disintegrate when they landed it
:I've never seen a Lanc, but I have seen a B17, and sat in a C47 (not airworthy, unfortunately
), and in my eyes anybody that flew in any of those things into combat was a true hero

Too true, real heros, no gloryfication or wanting praise just professionals doing a tough dangerous job that most did not expect to survive but did it anyway!

That Beaufighter did pack a punch but it was a grossly dangerous aeroplane to lose one engine just after take-off with! Even worse than a heavily loaded Canberra.
