He reckoned he'd sent a mate to a main dealer and they had a selection of cars to choose from ![Suspicious](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/Suspicious.gif)
Does anyone have personal experience of this? i.e. if I phoned around a couple of dealers would they sell a car to me for a £1 rather than have them towed off to auction?

Can't see it happening really mate. Seeing as salvage metal yards will pay a minimum of £20 for a car and come and collect it. So you would have to pay at least that and the car would have to be a complete wreck for it to go there!!

If the car drives, its worth £20...I got that for my Nissan after we failed miserably to blow it up the night before the tax expired ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

I don't think they pay for scrap any more as there are the disposal of oils and stuff that needs to be paid for so there's not as much money as there used to be.
Prepared to be corrected tho..!

phone up pretending to be a worker for the bbc and claim its for a new car related proggramme .
most dealers dont want the hassle of selling there tradings to the public , even if you know there is no come backs or warrenty ect .
they would rather send them all to the auctions at once than sell them out the back door .

I got my old '92 polo hack taken away by the local scrap man and got £20 for it last month. The mot had expired that day, the head gasket had gone and I'd stripped anything decent off it myself. Oh and I cashed the tax in and got a cheque for £40 odd from the DVLA a few days ago too..!!

Scrap prices have increased quite a lot recently. When that programme was filmed, the cost of enviromental disposal was higher than the scrap value of the car; now, the scrap value has increased and actually means you turn a 'profit' when you scrap a car.
So - at the moment you wouldn't be able to buy a car for a pound - however, the scrap value goes up and down depending on world demand for various metals.

A few years ago I brought a Metro off an apprentice at work (his dad was on his back to get it shifted and it didn't run) for £10, Made a phone call to the local breakers yard and they gave me £40 for it and collected it!

when i totally obliterated my scooby sport last may, total write off, and i mean total write off, a scrap yard here in scunny paid me £250 for it. another scrap yard heard wind of my accident and offered me £350 for st the engine and remaining interior bit 2 hours after selling. was gutted, as it cost me £300 to have it towed to a recovery yard via hiab crane.
