Default cheapest way to get sky + for existing customer????

Refering to the oracle.....

Is there a cheaper way that paying the £100 for the box and £60 installation to get sky+?

We are existing customers so no new customer deals and spend about £25/month with them. No issues with paying the £10/month charge but would like to try and remove the £160 initial fees.

Thanks in advance

Kev

I agree, its a rip off. I want HD but not prepared to pay up to £400 for box plus installation plus £10pm!! I'll wait couple of months and go to Virgin.

i'm in the same boat - same monthly cost ('ish - i think) but i thought it was £99 + £40 installation - not sure where i got that from though.
i have 4no. ct100 cables running between existing sky dish and lounge tv point so no drilling, new cable etc etc required for my installation.
i had asked sky by email but they're next to useless IMHO. my next move was going to be asking a local guy who installs tv aerials on new homes for us

I'm in the opposite boat - got Sky+, happy(ish) to pay the fee for the HD box but not going to pay £10pm for the HD subscription when i'm already paying £37 per month.

Only thing I can suggest Kev is that you buy a Sky+ box (try not to buy Amstrad ones) from eBay + a quad LNB, and see if you can get a local aerial installer to do it for you. Will probably work out cheaper than £160.

IK've been quoted £249 for Sky HD box and free installation if we pay ANOTHER £10 for multi-room, an extra £20 a month!!!

Is this the best I can do?

A lot seems to depend who you get on the other end.

If you phoned up threatening to cancel, they certainly used to be keen to keep you on board and usually gave you money off here or there. It now seems to be a bit inconsistent.

When I wanted Sky+ last year, I phoned up to say I was cancelling and was offered the Sky+ box at half price with free installation.

I've seen posts on other forums where people get good deals from the bloke trying to sell Sky in the High St/Shopping Centres.

Dave.

Get a box off eBAY. If you need a QUAD LNB buy one, fit that and run the second cable yourself, it's not hard.

I got Sky+ installed with a brand new PVR3 box for £49, no extra monthly charges.

Phone up and go through to the Turnaround Dept (cancellations), say you want to cancel your subscription as you don't get to watch the programs you want because you're often out. Say you want to get a more suitable Freeview recorder instead and they'll say have you heard of Sky+. I said I had, but it was too expensive last time I asked and was offered it for £49 all-in. A few friends have done it too, with only one person not being offered it, but that was probably their fault for waffling

We got Sky+ for free 14months ago by going to a one of the Sky sellers that have stalls in city centres of Supermarkets.

All they did was told me to cancel the current Sky account in my name and they signed up the wife in her maiden name. The payment on the D.D. form still came from my account but went through no problem (different departments). ALOT of people get Sky+ for free this way and thats how these stalls make it pay.

Last week we upgraded to Sky HD. The £149 deal only applies to people who have been with Sky for 8 years+.
I bought a new HD box from Ebay for £170. To swap the Sky+ and install the HD box takes 10 minutes max and then a quick call to Sky to get the HD channels switched on.

Must sayt the picture from my HD box on normal channels is a lot better than than the Sky+ bx and the HD channels themselves are superb. Hd channels are thin on the ground but it looks as though a few more will be live come 2008.

I got sky plus for £40 including fitting by threatening to cancel. When they asked why I said I have liked sky (have been with them for about 7 years) but telewest will give me their tv on demand (very similar to sky+) for free as a new customer. As this was the only reason I was going to cancel they did me this deal. Worked for my father in law to. This was some time ago now when the boxes were still about £200, would think you could get it all for free now.
If they call your bluff you do have 30 days to change your mind and not cancel. It may also depend on how long you have been with them for.

Good luck.

Sky WANTto hit 10 million homes by 2010.. less than 2.5 yrs away.. its getting harder to get / keep customers, so they are offering good incentives to keep 'churn' down at the moment.. we are constantly bombarded with internal mail etc to this effect, so talk to them, see if you can get yourself a deal....

True, Been with Sky since '97 phoned yesterday to cancel, we have had years of problems with signal, new boxes, cables and dishes/LNB's.

Planned to go with the new BT offer or tv/films on demand

Spent 20 mins on the phone, first 6 or so with some nerk in an Indian call centre who just wound me up, he passed me onto a chap in their Scottish call centre who made the offer, first offer was to replace the existing box FOC, next Sky+ for £49.00 and finally ended up with free Sky+ + Free install + the £ 10.00 per month is being dropped from June 07 and it will be free until then.

I will give it a try and see how i get on but may still leave if i have any more problems...

I did as this guy says...

Plus box off flebay 40 quid
quad LNB off flebay 10 quid
5m of twin cable with ends 5 quid -again flebay

Swapping and connecting the LNB was easy all i had to do then was phone Sky and get them to activate Plus.

Just done what Paul did....

Told 'em I wanted to cancel to go with Virgin and V+, for pretty much the same price but Virgin were throwing in the PVR (V+) as I already took phone and 10Mb broadband.

Came away with Sky+ for £0 + £0 installation and £0 per month - being installed on Tuesday.

Cool...

How does the quad lnb work then. I've got a 2nd hand sky+ box, but when i tried to get it activated, they kept fobbing me off with a speil on how they'd need to send an engineer and that would cost a fortune.

quad lnb is, as it says a four way outlet lnb rather than a single outlet.. for sky plus or HD , (which is basically a 'souped up plus box) you need TWO feeds, rather than just a single one that a standard sky box uses..

I called sky the other day to get HD, they told me on the phone it would be £349 for the box. I've already got the wiring and dish for sky, plus an onld Sky card which I had at my old house. Naturally I told them to **** off and bought myself a HD box off eBay for £138. Called them up asked them to match my old viewing card to my new box, and hey presto Sky HD for £138.

Does that mean that if I buy the quad lnb, it will take the single input from my wall socket and turn it into the two outputs that the sky+ box will require? I don't have access to my dish as its a communal one.
Cheers Jamie

Are they still charging you £10 extra per month for the HD though?

Some good advice there ,Dj Dunk. Just off the phone to sky and getting upgraded to a fully guaranteed, refurbed pvr 2 sky + box ,free with free installation this Tuesday and no monthly additional charge . Nice one .

Intersting. We are joining Sky on Sunday.

Our house already has a Sky+ dish with 2 feeds coming in to the lounge.

I mentioned this when I phoned up and he said it would still be a full install:

£99 kit + £60 installation I think

Could I just get my own Sky+ box off ebay (approx £40 as mentioned above), cancel the installation, and save myself £119 quid???

PS. We wanted the see/speak/surf package, but they won't be doing our exchange for a couple of months, so got the first 2 months half price, plus £10 off the first month, plus £60 M&S vouchers to share with my parents (introduce a friend).

[quote=hectic;6935351]Communal dish = your fekked!/quote]

not necessarily...some developers have been cabling for sky+ on communal dishes since 1999 .

depends where you are and who built the block really.

If youve already got the dish etc, get the Engineer to change it, AND the cabling.. tell them SEG 30 from Sky now means they have to, that'll fekk 'em..
