Agreed, hated using the ipod at first but now I have got used to it, its pretty simple and just as quick as copy and pasting (once itunes has opened it **** up, its such a slow program to start)

You can get 3rd party apps which are far better to use than the dog that is iTunes. iDump is handy to get your tunes back off again if you want to back them up to another device for example.

Anapod Explorer is a pretty good 3rd party app as well. Drag 'n' drop.

That looks good STI - cheers.

I'm thinking of getting an iPod as the new running shoes I've got are designed for the Nike / iPod widget thingy.

That's simply not true. The default encoder used when ripping a CD is AAC, which is m4a, however, you can change that to mp3 if you wish. Songs downloaded from iTMS are protected m4a though. Regardless, the iPod supports mp3 and m4a, so you do not need to convert any mp3 files to put them on your iPod.

If you use the "import" facility then yes, it will convert the files from whatever format they are in (provided iTunes can read that format) to whatever you have set as the encoding format, which, as said, is AAC by default. However, you do not need to "import" your music, you can simply use the "Add to Library" option, which will not import anything. If you use that option, you may wish to disable the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" option, as that will stop iTunes from creating duplicates of your tracks.

You do not have to use iTunes, as others have suggested, Anapod is pretty good.

Nope

I tried 10 pairs of trainers (Nike, RBK, Asics, Mizuno etc) in my local running specialist shop yesterday. I tried each pair on a treadmill and went for the Nike's purely on comfort and fit - couldn't give a hoot what the label says.

However, I'm a sucker for gadgets

Dont get an Ipod, there are plenty of MP3 players that dont limit you to their own software

itunes does what it needs to and its not exactly difficult to import - even my parents have got the hang of it! Sony's software is far worse!
Have apple sorted out the 'bug' with the running shoes which allowed you to be tracked as you ran (alledgedly )
