I'm thinking of buying an Onkyo amp that is to be released this week. Problem is I'd never heard of this make until a few months ago. Is it reliable kit?
Thanks

I had some gear back in Australia, it's pretty good stuff, their top-end AV-Amp sits up their with Denon and Pioneer, if not better than them as it's fully upgradeable like the Arcam stuff.
They aren't a big name over here though, massive elsewhere.
This would be about £3000 if in the UK.

Used to have an Onkyo cassette deck in the early eighties - very good quality.
Don't have any qualms about buying it (is it the 505?), there's no reason to think it won't be as reliable as anything else out there.

If I recall, Goodmans either bought there factory in the states, or took on manufacturing for them some years back.
Not heard much of them since, used to be highly rated by some of the AV forums / mags

Deep I was exactly the same when looking into an AV amp at xmas time - I kept coming back to the Onkyo but didn't have any brand awareness. I ended up buying the amp and haven't regretted it; a high quality piece of kit

LMAO
My research was quite limited in this case. I have no point of reference having never had an amp or similar equipment before. It seems to do all I'd want it to do and the build quality seems excellent. It produces a heck of a lot of heat though so needs to be well ventilated.

Thanks guys. Its the 605 I'm after, at £399. So far I have the Panny 50TH70XB and Kef 2005.2s, they're both sitting in boxes awaiting an amp and Sky HD box.
When I auditioned the Kefs they were linked up to a Denon 2307(£499) and it sounded more than good enough. If the Onkyo sounds as good as the Denon I would be very happy.
Shall I just order one or await the reviews?
Thanks

Go for it
Its the 674's updated version & so far from what i have heard its well worth it.
I think if Onkyo keep it up there wont be much out there to touch them in the price bracket for what they offer.

I've ordered the 605 too, was hoping to have received it by now. Has everything I need from an Amp for my minimal setup, I'll be running Kef 3005's through it.
Reviews from the states are issues with overheating but I believe that has been rectified with the UK market.
If I receive it in the next few days I'll give you a review.
Oakers

Thanks for all the help. I've ordered the 605 today, arrives tommorrow. My only concern is that it only has 2 HDMI in and one out, but as I don't game then two should be enough for Sky HD and DVD player.
Can't wait to rig the whole thing up now!!

I'm thinking of ordering the Denon 1930 DVD player (199pounds). Will this be good enough for my set up? (see post 13).
I don't want to spend too much in case I go for Blue Ray/HD DVD later on when they sort things out.
Thanks
