Default Hayfever

Evening everyone.

I suffer from this horrendous problem & i take some sort of tablets at the moment along with a nasal spray, although this is ok at times, i sometimes feel really lethargic at night.

Is there an injection of some sort you can get to combat this ?

Any suggestions would be gratefully appriecated.

Thanks

S

Not sure about the injections.. but have you tried different tablets, I had similar problems with a certain type of tablet.. changed to another and I was fine, plus they worked more effectively.

They no longer give the injections(Kenalog) you will have keep taking the pills.

I get it really bad, even the wifes perfume or stroking the dog after he has been in the fields sets me off. I just take the pills and nasal spray.

I remember having an injection several years back, steroid based I think, but they've refused to give it to me since I've been in the forces.

I'm thinking about giving homeopathy a go for next year.. figure nothing can hurt, and if it works it works, if it doesn't, it doesn't.

I've heard that a local honey is good, or that Health food stores sell a suplement that can help.

I get a real bad bunged up nose and use Lemsip Max decongestant

Normally my hayfever is awful, bringing on asthma etc and sleepless nights, but this year it has been pretty easy.

I had the injections for a couple of years, (going back a few now though) and to be honest, they didnt really work. Some of the tablets help but I dont bother taking them any more.

Unfortunately its one of those things that is a real pain and can make life uncomfortable for a while but there really isnt anything that can help. Instead of locking myself away this year, I spent more time than usual outside on the grass, golfing and sports etc, if that has helped me this year I can't really say.

As said I dont think they give the Kenalog injection anymore. Shame because it used to work for me.

I use perscription based Neoclaryton now. It doesn't work but at least I think I am trying to do something about it

It would be well worth trying the Tescos own brand tablets, which work out at 70p per box I think. Work just as well as any others I have tried.

Dont forget to change the brand each year, as you can build up an immunity to tablets you take regularly.

I think you can have a test carried out to find out what brings your hayever on.

I can cut grass all day long but a walk through a farmers crops and i'm in bits.

For cheap hayever tablets try chemist-4-u.com

There are a number of main remedies over the counter and some additional prescription drugs.

The main OTC drugs are acrivastine in Benadryl, Cetirizine in Zirtek, chlorphenamine in Benadryl and loratidine in Clarityn. Try the different brands as one may work well for you and one may not. When looking at different brands many contain the same active ingredient and so check this to see which ones are worth trying.

On prescription the main drug now is fexofenadine which replaced terfenadine which was in Triludan. I personally used Triludan since I was on the clinical test at University - it was excellent, non-drowsy but cumulative so needed to be taken every day of the summer.

It has been replaced by fexofenadine which is the metabolite of terfenadine, which apparently killed people if they had a heart condition, drank grapefruit juice and took a certain very small number of drugs in the right combination!

On really bad days I also back it up with Contact 400 to dry up the nose and Otrivine Antihistin to clear up the eyes.

I'm struggling much more than normal this year. The local honey thing did seem to have an effect last year, but recently I went on a cruise....so that was the end of the local honey plan.

Anyway I have been back for 2 weeks and I am using Xyzal from the docs (levocetirizine dihydrochloride). It has some effect, but I still have a lot of nasal issues...and I hate the sprays

Whatever tablet you find works best, go to a pharmacist and ask him for the GENERIC product. These are what is prescribed by doctors and do not carry the branding and are usually significantly cheaper. We use Loratadine and pay about £4 for a months supply.

Do you know the principals behind homeopathy? You may want to have a read of this first: Homeowatch

Wear sunglasses. I notice a massive difference when my eyes are protected, ok so sometimes you look a bit of a plum with your shades on when it's dull, but it stops the pollen getting into your eyes.
A decent set of lenses is a must so that you can see where you are going though, Oakleys are my lens of choice.

Hello mate.

The following is from my Dr allergy specialist wife.

There is a desensitisation treatment available, but to be considered for it you will need your GP to refer you to an allergy specialist and to be honest there aren't many of them in the country!

This link covers lots of info about hayfever and current treatments

Hayfever and allergic rhinitis

It's the immunotherapy you want to be asking about - this can be injections or tablets.

It really is a difficult problem and I feel sorry about your problem.

I suffer badly when the rapeseed pollen is in tha air and it used to be a big problem when I was working in the RAF because it gave me bad sinusitis due to the pressure changes. I never did find an answer to it and had to put up with it for a month. I had to carry Vick inhalers etc just to be able to do the job.

I hope they can find something to sort your problem out with more moderrn treatments.

Adding to that, that's it perfect midge weather. The little fkers were all over me last night.

Clarityn is what i used to take. It was neo-clarityn last year and something beginning with "L" this year.

Feel like i have a permanent flu...

What are peoples ideas on building up the protection by taking the tablets early? My ol' dear used to tell me to do this when i was a kid.

But for the last 5/6 years i've not bothered. Have only taken about 5 tabs this year. I like to see if i'm gonna get it this year, or is it the year i've finally grown out of it.

...and the sunglasses thing works for me too. Some days leaving/entering shops i can't see for crying, do feel embarrassed slightly, but have a light lense for non-sunny days, so can wear inside. ......Must dig them out, as it seems there's some sun on the way.

i went to ask about the injection a few years ago. i was refused as apparently it can cause some bad side effects. and its not recognised by the board of GP's now.

Beconase hayfever spray and Benadryl tablets seem to do the trick for me.

this year though it hasnt been too bad.

As for the Homeopathy, I'm not after it to cure cancer.. just to stop me wanting to tear my eyes out!

I really doubt any more harm will come of me eating some pollen, or whatever they do, than swallowing even more prescription drugs.

I never got it in Ipswich, think it was due to being on the coast. See breeze and all that.

I was told/read, that if you have hayfever when you're a kid, you can grow out of it. If you get it as an adult, you have it for life.

Any truth in that? Anyone heard the same?

Never suffered as a kid but started getting heyfever about 2 years after giving up smoking. This is the first year I've not resorted to drugs since. Although yesterday was the first day this year where I've suffered a bit. Doc prescribed the old Beconase nasel spay and worked well for me so it's all I've used ever since.

I had this as a kid as well so its been none stop, considering i was brought up in the countryside you would have thought it would have left me alone.

Got to just soldier on i suppose.

I have Loratadine tablets and a nasal spray called Nasobec Aqueous from the doc.

My hayfever used to be really really bad before I had these on prescription (I was using Benadryl etc.) but I don't notice it now as long as I take the tablets every day through the hayfever season

The only thing that used to work for me was Benadryl Plus (had to be the plus stuff too). This year the same tablets have just knocked me out to the extent that I have been having up to two hours sleep when i've been getting home from work, plus i've felt really depressed the following day. I've decided it's better to sneeze, wheeze and have itchy eyes

Just to add that the Loratadine tablets on prescription have no adverse affect on me like drowsiness etc......might be worth a try?
