Hvae a TV with an optical output
Looking at a s/h (On ebay) surround sound system which has an optial input.
The unit is a decoder/amp and 5 speakers
I am assuming that if i connect vial the optical ports then i will get surround sound.
Is this correct
My last TV had it built in so not an issue

hmmmm....
Generally your surround amp does any processing - not your tv.....
For example - watching eastenders - you feed your amp with a stereo signal and it will convert it to Pro-Logic/Pro-Logic IIx/DTS:Neo6 etc.
Do you have sky or something? - Sky box L/R to amp via phono usually.
For any DVD's you watch, the dvd player is connected to your AMP via optical or coax and the amp processes the DD & it comes from your amp/speakers.
Generally once you have a surround amp you have NO sound from your TV speakers at all - you turn the TV sound off. All the sound is from your amp with all its requesite inputs/outputs.
All the TV does is show a picture - nothing else - the amp does all the sound work.
