Fast cars and geeks
Very nearly got knocked off my bike this morning by a very badly driven Scooby WRX (almost new) driven by a total geek. Looked about 18, probably about 7 stone, big old glasses.
Wife and are convinced that 90% (or more) of performance cars are driven by nerds.
Highly controversial and bound to spark "jealous" comment (honestly not so) but it would seem that the truly cool people drive old wrecks.
We "hired" a celebrity speaker the other day for a big event- Disgustingly good looking (said the girls), dressed ultra sharply, very successful, excellent speaker, stunning wife - Car - G reg BMW 316 in terrible nick.
So come on - anyone agree?!

Partially agree.
Look at Bill gates. Probably got kicked about by all the Jocks for being a Geek. $65 Billion later, he can buy what ever he wants, while Jock man is working in a warehouse earning **** money.
On the other hand, Mr good looking could have bagged himself a very good looking girl. High maintenance women and 2 kids later, all he can afford is a banged up BMW.

lol not too sure I agree.
One scooby owner I know falls into the "geek" catagory but acts far from it.
Other are me, 34, working for Fedex and no exams to my name
A 29 yr (roughly) old AA driver
A 34 year old store manager
Now the big question, were you wearing cycle clips and a high vis band ? With a wicker basket on your bicycle

Sorry - not having a go at Scoobs (I like them a lot) - just an example.
When I had my R32, I noticed pretty much every one I saw was driven by a miserable geek (not many around so I used to flash my lights at first when I saw another- NEVER got a flash back so gave up!) - similar for M3s and all sorts.
This honestly isn't a jealous dig, it just seems more and more common.
Geek to me doesn't always mean IT nerd - can be anyone that looks kind of, well, nerdy.
No cycle clips for me - boardshorts, a thermal (errrmmm - a but tight but it needs to be) and "normal" shoes. Giro hat probably a bit nerdy though....

surly a geek would drive something practical that was good for the environment and returned good MPG
Not a gas guzzuling, turbo'd rally bred car
I dont know any 18 year olds that could afford the insurance and running costs either

Maybe we have different ideas of what a "geek" is?!
Here's my idea of some - age doesn't matter. The sort of person who might play D&D in his spare time, who sits up all night writing code, etc, etc.
Again, NOT having ago at Scooby drivers, just performance car drivers in general as a simple observation.

Lets face it, the original Impreza fan base is a bunch of (WRC branded) anorak clad IT consultants. Ok as the cars have become cheaper, it has diversified to now include the chavvy wide boys. But you still see plenty anoraks of all ages driving them.
....I even sold mine to one

Really cool people don't care what car they drive at all, because all the cool stuff in life pretty much excludes driving.
If you look at the creative industries, where coolness originates, a lot of them shun cars. Personally I don't think any car makes any person cool.
Also there are two type of people involved in IT/computing. On the commercial side it's pretty much normal people - most real computer nerds would consider it beneath them to be working in a company installing desktops or code cutting. The real geeks are in the academic institutions and that's where you find the strange looking people.

Except a Mercedes 190SL - one of the few cars of all time that can be driven in stringback driving gloves and you still look cool.
Mind you - only seems to work on the Cote D'Azur!!
PS most Scoob drivers look like potatoes!

Footballers?
Rock stars?
NBA Players?
They all seem to own cars such as Ferrari, Porsche, Lambos etc
I think its more true to say the owners of performance cars tend to have money

I suspect Bill Gates is a very happy man, mainly because he isn't driven by money as his primary motivation. He became one of the richest men by a combination of his technical skills and being in the right place at the right time.
Now Steve Balmer is clearly a very unhappy man and proof that even billionaire can be ansolute losers.

He runs the largest charitable foundation in the world. Probably not an unsatisfying way of spending one's time.
