Default Asbestos

I've got a garage worth of asbestos that I need to shift. I know what to do with it as far as not breaking it and wettinig it e.t.c but what i need to know is where can i get some of the red bags from. Once i have it bagged up i can get the concil to come and give me a certificate which means i can dispose of it at the local tip on a wednesday. So, where can iget some bags from?

TIA
Andy.

I would have thought you would have been able to get the council to collect it on your behalf to be honest considering the health risks.

Can you really just get the council to come and collect it that easily? Over here in Germany it costs a small fortune to dispose of asbestos!!

I was under the impression that it had to be dealt with by a specialist?

Give Environment Services Dept at your local council a call and they will advise.

it costs a small fortune to dispose of anything in Germany, dead TÜV inspectors are particularly difficult and pricey to dispose of

A B&Q paper job isn't going to do squat, if you are handling asbestos and there is breakage and the result of fibres, you need some serious kit to protect you.

it will all depend on what type of asbestos it is, you are best speaking to either the council or HSE they will advise accordingly.

I find it's better to keep them on a leash rather than kill them

you need to get it specially moved, your council do have the obligation to assist you in this matter.

you will need more than a face mask too, all your clothes etc will need to be disposed of with it as well. Although you should be wearing disposable overalls to do this.

i can have a look on my company website and see what info we have on the disposal of it if you like?

Depends whether it is blue or white asbestos, the blue is the bad stuff. Whatever you do-don't push your luck over it.

whatever it is really get proper disposal specialists to get rid of it. what form of material is the asbestos in?. e.g. ceiling tile, insulation, pipe lagging?. Most forms require proper disposal but asbestos insulation board doesnt.

although personally its not worth the risk whatever form its in.

I'm sure you have to contact Environmental Health to get any asbestos checked out. FGS, don't do anything with it yourself

I looked into this once as i was going to buy a house with one. It might only be 10% asbestos so if you are careful no problem in sorting it yourself. (obviously check what type it is) You can get an asbestos skip, which is basically a sealed skip. Bag it up etc etc, jobs a gooden.

Got friends "in the business" of asbestos removal and the Health and Safety is amazing... Full suits, face masks, shower downs in special tents etc... It's incredible. These lads get paid very well because of the risks. Dont underestimate how dangerous it can be...

i wouldnt touch the stuff with a bargepole.

get the professionals to get rid of it.

Andy, whereabouts are you?

In Reading the local council tip will take white asbestos from local residents - although you need to inform them first, and they provide info on safe handling.

Got to be worth a call to your council's Environmental people.

Cheers,
Steve

I had a similar problem last year. The council advised me that I could transport it to our local tip as long as the pieces would fit through the 6x2 ft gaps in the asbestos skip. Ours however were over 10ft, so we ended up having to get specialists in to move it, they turned up dressed like there was a nuclear spillage in my back garden. I handled with gloves and a mask and goggles, dangerous stuff!

One thing I did note was that different companies gave different advice, and my local council weren't too sure on how to deal with it when I orginally contacted them!

Thanks for all the input. The above is what we have done previously. Its currently bagged up in tough plastics bags and taped. When we took it down we wore the face masks suits and gloves e.t.c e.tc after giving it a coat of spray paint and then wetting it down once the paint was dry (it was also raining slightly. I just need some more bags before i do as Steve suggested.

It might not fit into a bag so you've got to smash it up first.

Exclamation

Talk to your local council
I am sure it has to be dismantled/removed/disposed of by qualified and licenced people.
