Post Just been to the dentist and its not looking good!

Just been to the dentist and apparently the tooth next to my wisdom tooth has a hole in it and may need to be removed but have said it needs to be done at hospital. Has anyone one had a tooth removed. Do they use general or local? Is it painful?

I've had no pains. Trouble is I keep getting food caught in there which gives me POO breath and the Fiancee isn't too keen on that. Lovely!

Yeah, i've had 2 bottom wisdom teeth out.

Dentist referred me to the hospital.
I said nicely to the dentist, I'm in bupa, so can we do this privately in a nice clean hospital please.
So I checked in to the Ulster Clinic (Only the local Northern Ireland folks will know this place) early morning.
Loads of talking - signing your life away incase something goes wrong.
They describe this procedure as minor bone surgery, and go on about with all forms of surgery there are risks blah blah.

Lunch time I go off to have it done.
Heavy sedation administered (Drugged up), then don't really remember much except feeling loads of pushing and hauling then no more memories.

Woke up later wondering what the **** had happened, and wondering why I'd pretty much lost abour 3 hours of time.

Turns out under heavy sedation I decided that with all the pushing and hauling I decided that I'd do some pushing and hauling of my own!
So at that point they decided that best just put him out completely!

Sent home that night with a load of strong pain killers and an uncomfortable jaw/mouth, but never really sore as such.

Thanks for the info. Not sure I like the signing your life away bit but apart from that sounds ok. Never know the antibiotics may do the trick. Lets hope so.

I had four removed under local.

1)Four injections didn't work - Had 12 in total - Made me spasm and violently throw up. Four were through the roof of my mouth - total agony.
2)Two still didn't work - I felt everything on one tooth.
3)The drill burnt my mouth at the edge.
4)The drill slipped, went under my tongue - no feeling in it for four months.
5)My jaw was cracked.
6)I got a very bad infection and was rushed to hospital three days after it happened.
7)Blood sprayed everywhere.

I left the hospital a gibbering mess.

Have fun!

Had 4 out under general about 7 years ago.

No probs with the actual op, although 1 tooth was so close the siatic nerve so I lost fine feeling in the right hand side of my tongue. Only I know I felt drained after I came too.

All holes healed in my gums within 2 weeks.

Some people can end up looking like hampsters with swollen gums and cheeks, only 1 gum swelled up on me cos it was a bitch to get out (the 1 close to the nerve).

You shouldn't have a prob.

Doesn't mean a thing anymore. Dentists only have local at their disposal now, and if they think its beyond that they will refer you in. Also will refer if its going to take longer than they have time for, or its close to other things that could cause problems like nerves other teeth etc.

Probably just a way of clearing the dentists waiting list and getting you onto a different one.

You'll probably end up getting a leg cut off cause a leg surgeon had a free half hour .

ps has 4 out under local as a kid - didn't hurt a bit - but you can't talk for the rest of the day.

Oh - and when the anestetic (**** nose how to spell it) wears off it's agony

Few dentists do wisdom teeth in the chair these days...

its easier to refer to a hospital for a general, as there may be some effort involved in extraction...

me

no worries

no teeth

Had all 4 out under general many moons ago. Had a bit of a bad reaction to the anaesthetic so had to stay in an extra night (just throwing up a bit) - but as it was a BUPA hospital, was rather like being in a really nice hotel, so no worries!

Had my wisdom tooth and the one next to it taken out about 18 months ago

Under local by a junior student dentist

Had to have my gum sliced open, peeled back, then hammer, chisel, pliers and screwdrivers eventually got them out after 45 minutes of messing about

Then had 10 stitches in my gum, was fine unitl that evening then the pain kicked in, next day I had two cup o soups with a full loaf of Warburtons Toasty loaf I was so hungry

Nothing to worry about having a general.
I had one last year, but not for a tooth.
They do explain all off the side effects pre-op. If I had my choice, I would go General everytime.
Seriously, nothing to worry about IMO.

Hope you get it sorted, nothing worse than toothache

Funnily enough, when I had my four wisdoms out in hospital (under a general), I was in a ward where everyone had water works problems.
I doubly made sure that the staff knew exactly what I was in for!

My local dentist does generals - or at least still have Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen in the surgery.

Noticed this morning when I was in to have a root canal started
