Hi guys, im on the lookout for a large plasma screen and this deal seems very very good.

£999 but when using code, can get it for £929. This also comes with stand, free delivery and dvd surround sound system.

Any reviews on this tv would be really appreciated

Also i notice the weight of the plasma is 62kg compared to 21kg for the LCD below.

Can you lay plasma screens flat, ie transport them in a car? How long do they last? Ive heard all kinds of horror stories, image burning, tubes needing replaced etc.

Its either this 50'' plasma or a samsung 40'' LCD

Absolutely not. You can with LCD

Plasmas dont have tubes, although they will need re-gassing after an extended period (say 30,000 hours - which equates to around 7 years on average)

Screen burn isn't really an issue these days, there are all sorts of clever little tricks screens do to avoid it

Why are you limited to those 2 inparticular?

In any event the number one thing I would do, rather than let anyone here talk you into Plasma or LCD, is to go to Richer sounds (not currys) or some other electrical retailer that actuallys knows how to hook a set up and look to see what kind of picture pleases you most.

Samsung range because i personally think they are the nicest looking televisions, very smart especially with the matching piano black stands.

However always heard plasma picture is quite a bit better than LCD especially in 37''+ and this £929 price is very tempting especially as it includes stand and 5.1 surround sound.

Decisions, decisions

Just another quick question for anyone that knows... Instead of forking out £500+ on blu-ray/hd dvd, are upscaling dvd players any good? Are they linked via hdmi and has anyone got any opinions on them?

The Sharp screen have a the glossy black finish too. Besides, it's all well and good having a nice surround, but what's the picture like?

Not necessarily true. There difference between Plasma and LCD picture quality, but LCD tech has caught up now.

The choice is now between the warm rich Plasma and the crisp sharp LCD

Upscaling playters are ok - But not a patch on a good bluray/HD DVD.

Personally? I would buy a PS3 for £400 (in fact someone has one for sale in Computer chat for £300, then you have the best of both worlds - BluRay and an upscaling DVD player (PS3 upscales)

Total, complete and utter B0110X Tell me, have you ever seen the nozzle which allows you to re-gas a plasma TV Is it done through one nozzle, and if so the pipework to feed the millions of individual pixels would be an amazing engineering achievement Or are they supposed to re-gas each individual pixel That would take some time

Plasma re-gassing is a MYTH. It has never been possible and never will.

LCD = Lower power consumption, lighter physical weight, easier transportation, full 1080p.

Plasma = Brighter, better blacks, higher contrast, larger colour palette, more natural film-like image quality, better fast motion response, 1080p costs more.

Give me Plasma anyday for now.

Can vouch for this set as I have one. I paid that price over 4 months ago, I reckon if you shopped around you could get it cheaper. I bought an upscaling DVD player (Denon, cost £199) and the pq is fantastic at this price level

Im looking at a new TV and was set on LCD but discussions on here have made me consider plasma also. One question though is it really worth bothering with 768 res? Surely if you are going to buy a HD ready TV then you want to go for a 1080p or is the difference minimal?

1080p plasma's were just coming out and I viewed my 768 set side-by-side against one, as well as a 1080p LCD and the difference is indeed minimal. With 1080p plasmas now becoming more affordable then it is worth it if the difference is within a couple of hundred, but the set I viewed was £6k against my £1.5k 768 screen, so no contest I'm afraid.

MYTH!!! Contrary to belief; It's not a fridge!

Look it up if you want.

In reality the MTBF on a Plasma is far better than that of a CRT, and the brightness of a CRT decreses far faster than that of a plasma (quoted lifespans being about 20,000 to 30,000 hours for a CRTverses 60,000 hours quoted on a modern screen). LCD also has a backlight(s) which does degrade in performance over time (ignoring sudden failure) and are also quoted at 60,000 hours.

Tesco's have a 50" Plasma 1080 dpi for under a grand too ( think that was Samsung or Phillips, looked real nice, and a good price considering it's 1080 dpi

I find using R22 instead of R134a gives far superior performance

Neither are very 'soft furnishings' friendly though. You need to be careful you don't leave unsightly stains on your throw-backs.

This flat screen stuff is hard work.

I was originally buying the Panny TH42PX70 but then measured our front room and its a bit too big, so decided on the 37" model. Was then told by a local specialist that Plasma is no good for the Xbox so had to start again on LCD. Have now been told by AV Forums that plasma is OK for gaming, but after viewing them in the TV shops I don't know which is best - LCD looks really sharp and clear to my eyes.

try and get both, side by side running the same feed

i watched back to the future on my plasma the other day (itv2 horrible logo onscreen)

after the film i could see the itv2 logo when on a white background, within 20 mins or so it was gone, just by watching normal TV, not really an issue IMO

i have played gears of war for 14 hours in one day and never had a problem with mine

this re gassing myth really annoys me,
they dont need it,
i was in a similar predicament, i opted for a 37" viera plasma, and i got an uscaling dvd player from pixmania for 32 quid, it has usb and memory card slots so the card comes straight out of the camer or phone and straight in the dvd player, it works a treat, i wouldnt bother with av forums either they do your head in over there, it just gets far to technical. afaik its the processing chip on plasma tellys that does the work so i went for the dearest one i could afford not just the biggest screen, dont forget the size of your lounge, mine has an extension on it and the telly is in the opposite corner and the screen is plenty big enough

I know mate, It's just a load of hype, if it ever needs topping up all you have to do is take it down to the local petrol station and put 20pence in the air line, fill it up and its as good as new.

Unless its leaking, but I'm told that kwik fit can sort that out, and balance it too
