Should have said that he was "familiarising himself with the vehicle".

It's worked before

Silly person. In germany people can drive as fast as they want on some roads, where is the evidence that our laws are right and theirs is wrong. Going by insurance premiums the germans are thinking the right way!

I love how the woman from Brake describes it as 'shocking and horrific' - maybe she should pop out to Iraq to get some perspective on the real meaning of shocking and horrific

I think there was something to do with him working for Helphire, and he took the car out a spin without telling anyone. He later resigned if I remember correctly.

I like how the BBC manage to get into the report someone talking about a village and a 30mph limit. Just how is that relevant to this chap doing 170+ in a 70 limit

Could it be they are out to make the story seem as bad as possible? I wonder

"Driving at 172mph is quite amazing. If you want to do that speed why not go to Silverstone?"
Somebody should have quipped

"Erm the main straight isn't long enough for a Porsche"

The speed is thought to be the highest recorded in the UK for such an offence
Did the TopSecret guy not get deported a while back for doing a lot faster than that?

It's not big and it's not clever but I was nearly caught doing the same'ish speed on an open stretch of motorway having just had my car turned up to 32psi boost at the workshop.

In the distance ahead was something in the hard shoulder and I started to let off and as I got nearer I could see it was a Police Range Rover. I then hit the brakes and brought it down to 133mph which I got clocked for but passed them at 80'ish. They came after me which I expected and pulled me over.

All credit to the officer who came for a chat, who quite obviously knew I was slowing down from the noise the car was making but didn't rant. No lecture, just explained the procedure and was, I think, very fair in court.

Got away with 6 points but a bigger fine. This was on the day the newspapers had '100MPH Automatic Ban' on the front pages too!!

Lucky day that. It surprised me just how far those guns work and I haven't attempted to repeat it since.
