Default Leaving a job

I've been working at a **** hole company for 2 months now but tonight i've been offered a new job.
The company i'm leaving promised this and that and basically lied during my interview so i left the previous job expecting more money (bonuses - turns out no1 gets this though), etc but it's worked out on the flat wage i'm around £60 a week worse off

As i've been there for less than 3 months and haven't signed a contract of employment do i have to work a notice?
We get paid monthly so i don't want to walk out and have them hold back the money they owe me (+ the £100 they overtaxed me in the last wage....)?

If i go in on tuesday and say i'm leaving there and then do they have to pay me what i'm owed?

cheers

Well i'm writing my notice out today (dated today) and going to drop it through the letterbox so when they get it tuesday morning they can't say i haven't given a full weeks notice (not my fault it's bank holiday on monday)

This should be ok shouldn't it?

What are the chances that future employers might want to contact them for a reference?

No matter how much you want to try not to **** anybody off.

Just tell them that you've had a better offer and you're leaving.

You never know when you might bump into people in the future.

Echo Jasey. If you stick in the same industry you will definately pump into old colleagues in the future.
Don't leave under a black cloud mate.

If they over taxed you then this can be claimed from the next company. You may even see it in the final paypacket from the company. If not do not worry as when you give the next place your P60 they will use that to correct your tax. You may not see the tax returned in one lump sum but expect by April 08 everything to be straight.

HUH - dropped the letter through the letterbox on sunday which basically said i was giving a weeks notice hoping the boss would have a word with me when we were back at work (today).
Well seen the boss several times and he hasn't said a word - misserable pillock!
A job needed to be finished tonight that i'd been working on all day (correcting some1 elses bodge up) - 10 mins after the bell (yep we have a bell) everyone else had gone home so i thought sod it - why should i put myself out for them and went home - bet the boss gives some snide remarks tommorow, well i suppose i can say if he couldn't care less about me then i feel the same about him

only 3 more days to last

As much as you may want too never ever burn bridges, you never know what may happen in the future.

As mentioned if you stay in the same sector you WILL always cross paths at some time. Bite you tongue and be as nice as pie this will p#ss them off but they have nothing to come back at you with.

If they withhold what is owed you will have them legally i did in my last job, they tried every trick in the book not to pay me the £9k they owed me but the day before final pay day HR folded and instructed finance to pay up.

well 2 days left to go and the boss hasn't said a word yet

i guess i'll have to go to head office on friday to see when i'll be getting paid - not sure if i have to wait till next month when they do the wages or if i'll get it before i go?

the new job isn't in the same industry so no worries there - i'm a desent person and i always work up till the end before i leave a job even when i know i'll never go back

Why did you need to be a coward and write a letter.
I just went into my old boss and said "I'll be leaving a in a few weeks so you might want to find a replacement"
His face went the colour of fresh snow but was polite enough, didn't try and butter me up with a better offer (I think he knew I was going to do something I really enjoy).
Would have been nice to have had a bit extra in the final pay packet to say thanks for the last seven years hard graft in getting the company where it was, but you can't have it all I suppose.

p.s. the grass is sometimes greener.

i wasn't being a coward - a letter of resignation is a written letter?
i had to give 1 weeks notice and it was bank holiday on monday - if i handed the letter to him on tuesday i might have had to work until the following tuesday (i start the new job on monday)
