Question Garmin SatNav?

I know absolutely sod all about these things and really don't want to spend 2 days on Google.

But I need to get one to help a family member who has just got a job driving to different addresses in SE (actually just in Sussex). So I just want something basic and reasonably reliable. No bells and whistles needed although it would be good if it showed distances to help with mileage claims.

I am about to go to Halfrauds and buy a Garmin Novi 200 model for £150.

Can anyone reassure me that these are OK please? d

I have Garmin built into my headunit, and also use it in the USA when im out there. No issues with it whatsoever.

Certainly good enough for town to town
They (as can all nav's) be a little awkward when it comes to strangely located places, but 99% spot on

Hello

I have a Garmin Nuvi 250 and it managed to take me from deepest, darkest East Sussex all the way to Poland without any problems.

Edit: I bought mine from PC World and their internet price (to pick up in store) is still one of the cheapest at £159: GARMIN NUVI 250 Sat Nav System at PC World UK - Cheap GPS systems including the latest GARMIN NUVI 250.

See personally I disagree.
Tom Tom maps are slightly clearer in definition, but Garmin announces road names, auto zooms in and out, and I have not got lost with it yet

I dont think TomTom holds the same prestige it once did.
It gets you from A to B, finds petrol stations etc en route if needed, and gives a GPS speed.
Other than that, what else is there?

Garmin gives a nice little dashboard display of distances travelled, speeds etc. Tom Tom may also do this, but these functions are already more than I expected or wanted.

Full 7 character postcode search.... job done

I found that both units worked well, what swings me towards the tomtom are the real voices, the computerised ones that the garmin has are all bloody annoying. John Cleese and Ozzie all the way here. Oh and one more thing, the Garmin I had in the US would say "recalculating' all the bloody time.

you can turn that off easily in options
The voices really aint that bad are they? I thought they were pretty good with most of the stuff. Especially being able to announce the road names. Comes in handy at times.

Not that bad, but not a patch on Ozzy and his foul mouth.

Garmin's maps tend to be more precise for the USA
TomTom's are slightly better for the UK

Of course we do have Beachy Head in Sussex so I do need something that is reasonably accurate................

I've got a Garmin Nuvi 350.

Very pleased with it, always got me to where I'm going and much smaller than most TomToms so easier to carry.

It was a lot easier to load waypoints - or POI's in TomTom speak - on the Garmin, very easy in fact, I just downloaded a program - GPSBabel I think - and it found the Garmin and uploaded to it. A bit more involved getting them on the TomTom.

I see the latest tomtoms are a lot thinner than their pregnant predecessors.

I got a nuvi 670 (i think) and im not really that impressed with it, i do live in deepest darkest rural Devon, and the bloody thing always tries to send me through the smallest twistiest lanes it can find, it dos'nt seem to matter what setting i put it on, it will get you where you want to go, but not the easiest or quickest route.
