You all know me as a left wing lunatic, but I have to say, the Lib Dems are stretching beyond even my limits. What with yesterdays ridiculous talk of having a carbon zero country by 2050 (which is fine, but they are basing thier figures on rejecting nuclear power, and relying on some, as yet, uninvented power source).

They have now said they provided that they have no criminal record, and can pass a written test, illegal immigrants can stay in the country and apply for citizenship.

I wonder what other illegal activity this will extent to? Perhpas If I commit murder, and then stay out of trouble for 10 years, I'll get a pardon. Perhaps if I stab someone in the face and then rape them, ill be ok so long as I don't get caught for a few years.

I can see what the Lib Dems are tryign to to - They are trying to solve the illegal immigrant problem by making them legal.

It's a bit like making the violent crime problem go away by legalising GBH.

Everytime I think this lot become vaguely electable, they manage to come up with some lunacy that reminds me why they will never be anything more than the third party.

To be honest, this is pretty much what Labour has already done with the reorganisation of the Borders and Immigration agency anyhow - all the very old cases have just been written off and classed as having been closed - effectively giving the individuals the indefinite right to remain.

The problem is the law regarding immigration... and until thats fixed - its never going to work.

That was always the case. If you could prove you were here for 12 years, hadn't committed any crimes then you would automatically get indefinately leave to stay.

Pete, suddenly you've gone all Daily Mail. Why do you instantly link illegals with murder, rape and stabbing? It says someone who's stayed here and not got a criminal record. OK, either they've been involved in organised crime and stayed under the radar for 10 years - yes, possible, in which case change the no criminal record to not suspected of a serious crime - or they've just done gardening, painting, or other labouring jobs which most white chavs find too much like hard work. If the latter, what's the problem? And isn't this more or less what our republican friends across the pond are proposing with the Mexicans?

No,no, I wasn't trying to suggest that all illegal immigrants are murderers et all at all. I was just saying that illegal activity is illegal activity, and the fact you did it 10 years ago doesn't make it alright.

I just think that papering over the cracks like this is asking for trouble - They are in effect saying that the best way to solve the illegal immigration problem is to make a percentage of illegal activity, legal.

Like I said, the same as reduce violent crime by making GBH legal.

I would much prefer to see the root causes addressed.

This is a well-worn argument, on both sides I certainly wouldn't equate illegal entry and sustenance by doing manual labour with GBH. Here we go down the "victimless crime" route, like drug-taking, abortion, prostitution (and remember even suicide used to be criminal) - if anyone wants to continue it, feel free to use Google to dredge up a never-ending debate

If they want to give citizenship to people who are members of organised drug and women trafficking networks, that's a whole different ball game

You have inadvertanly hit the nail on the head Brendan. If she follows the correct route then she will be expected to jump through endless hoops. Perhaps she should try coming in via Sangat buring her passport on the way. In my limited experience itll be a damned sight easier for her to enter the country that way!

I think that any illegal's in the UK should prove they've been here for 10 years by showing a picture of themselves outside the OLD Wembley Stadium wearing union jack boxers and a loaf of bread on their head..... anyone failing to do this is clearly lying and should be either shot or deported (or both)

Enter is one thing. Apply for jobs appropriate to her education is another. The above proposal needs 10 years, we're hoping to only take six (usually 3 for married couples but I don't live there)

It's ridiculous! As has already been said, how do you prove you've been here for 10 years, and how do you prove you have committed no crime? If you are an illegal immigrant, you are below the radar for several reasons!
