Default Sky HD set-up question.......

Very nearly ordered Sky HD but couldn't get as I havn't got a landline (Sky wouldn't let me have it without)
I have broadband with Virgin and they keep ringing me offering me a phone line for 'just' £2.00 a month.
Does anyone know if the Sky box needs to be connected to a BT line or will the accept a Virgin line

Thanks in advance

Sky is a BT only line fella

Why not get one installed?

Might do Looks like my only option, although I know I will never use the landline for calls, £2.00 per month was a good offer - BT's lowest is £10.50 (plus maybe an installation fee?)

you only need the landline for ordering box office off the box - something you can do by calling them.

get a box of ebay, and just order a card.

As soon as the installer left the drive, I pulled the phone out.

Sky works perfectly well with a cable phone line - doesn't need to be a BT line.

The phone line is also used if you have multi-room (more than 1 box) as they regularly dial back to validate that they're still in the same house. That's because additional boxes are £10/month and they don't want you sharing them with mates.

Well, if that's the case, the sky will find it rather difficult to talk to my Sky box
Perhaps I should hook up an answer machine to it......

I don't think the dialback is needed unless you have multi-room.

If it can't dial out they send you letters for a while threatening to charge the full whack for the second box.

It's to stop you taking the second box to a different house.

I thiunkyoull find that in the contract you signed you must keep the phoneline connected for 12 months. If you dont you are liable to be charged a certain amount.

With an HD box the phone line is connected to accept updates into the box itself.

i have had sky for 5+ years and i was on bt when i first signed up, i switched to virgin half way through and never had any problems at all. i believe you just need to be connected to a phone line no matter who the supplier is. I am having my sky+ upgraded tomorrow to hd an if i remember i will ask the installer if there is an issue with the phone line.

The only real thing that i have noticed that they use the phone line for is to up date and modify your sky package

I have just had sky hd installed, and it works perfectly fine with a Virgin (NTL) phone line.

I'm out of contract, and have been for about 7 years. Tough.

Lets get this straight once and for all.

There are only two Sky contracts whereyou need a phone line connected indefinitely....

One is Sky Multiroom. This can be BT or cable and long as its a landline. End of.
The Second is Sky Broadband, where you need a BT ADSL enabled line (although there is talk that Sky will offer their own phone service - eventually).

The only other thing that requires a line is if you sign up to OPTIONAL discounted box and installation programme. In which case, in order to get the discount, you must have the box connected to a landline for 12months minimum, once again doesn't matter who it is with.

If you don't want the box connected to a phone line, you have to to pay for the FULL price of the box and FULL price of installation. Getting this is difficult as most call centre employees don't realise this option exists If you don't suceed, go to an independant aerial/satelite installer who will sort that out, as I mentioned earlier; signing up to discount box/installtion contract is totally optional
