Default Changing my bank - recommendations?

I've decided to move from the Halifax.

My wife has an account with them and went over her overdraft of £100 by a £1.

For that, they are charging £58. I know she should take more care of finances but its happened. You would think after having the account for 15 years they'd be a bit more sympathetic but thats banks for you.

Plus after their treatment regarding my previous broadband supplier and the Direct Debit, I've been meaning to do it for a while.

We have 3 accounts with them plus savings.

Are some banks still giving money for new accounts?

ALSO - if anyone has a link to the standard letter to banks re: charges I'd be greatful for it.

P.s. colleague at work used his templates for reclaiming bank charges and successfully received about 70% of what she was asking for.

Clarebabes - spot on there mate, those templates have been carefully thought about covering all angles

DO NOT go with RBS, my mate has had over £5k in charges in the past 4 years! My missus had the same problem then went with co operative bank - so far so good

I only have savings with the Nationwide, but aren't they supposed to be pretty good?

I've been with the RBS for the last 15 years after Barclays done the same as the Halifax except i was OD for 35p

The RBS have been good for me and get no complaints on their service or charges, stay in the clear and you wont be charged. Direct Banking is good too for when i need it. Had no problem in various branches across the country with any of their staff either. They get a thumbs up from me

I don't know if it makes any difference but all three accounts only have £100 overdraft on them.

Some gives good overdraft rates (A&L) but that doesn't seem beneficial to us. Abbey offer 8% up to a certain amount but a higher overdraft rate.

lpski1 - there isn't an RBS branch in town, nor A&L.

I'd give the wife a slap for spending £101 more than she had.

Nationwide are a fair weather bank.

If you do any naughty stuff (bounce a DD, go over your OD limit etc) they clamp down pretty quickly.

I am looking to move away from Nationwide as soon as I can.

Do you need to visit a branch all the time? i think you could apply for an account online or they would send you the details and your nearest branch to respond to. I rarely visit my local branch, if anything to pay chqs in, but if they are shut you can do this via the cashpoint.

RBS | Instant access accounts | Cash ISA, and other savings accounts savings if any use for you.

RBS Personal banking | Apply for a Key Account current accounts with OD rates.

(no i dont work for RBS)

We get paid via cheque at the moment so need a branch.

Abbey is only across the road from our offices so might have a look there.

I know all banks will charge for what has happened but I still want to move.

Don't worry about punishment. She knows I'll be stingey with the lube this weekend

If you have savings then you should have some clout with the bank.

For the first time in 10 years I was charged by the Co-op Bank, total of £54.

One quick phone call advising all our accounts woul be closed and all our savings would be withdrawn and they couldn't refund it fast enough.

Have you tried speaking to them?

Give them a ring and complain, they should drop the charge and you can still move to another bank.

Get onto that Money Saving Expert website. Really good unbiased information.

I used their templates and got back 100% of the charges from HSBC.
