Default Being a Police Officer in the UK (2)

Youth with an 'AK47' on station platform - Telegraph

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "A careful assessment was made by a senior, experienced officer as to whether an armed response vehicle [ARV] should be deployed.

"As there was little information and no immediate threat to life it was decided that an ARV was not necessary. However, as a precaution, plain clothes officers were sent to further assess the situation. A short time after the initial call — within 15 minutes — the man had got on to a train."

British Transport Police have arrested a 15-year-old boy on suspicion of possession of a firearm or imitation firearm.

**

it's enlightening to hear that GMP regard an AK clearly brandished in public as not warranting an instant response. i'm sure the transport police liked being handed this job ... man on train with suspected assault rifle. jeez.

Knowing the gun issues in the GM area, they are pretty limited with their ARV's and probably only deploy to places with firm intelligence.

Lose-lose situation.
Dont deploy, and confirmed its an AK.... failed to react.
Deploy and its a toy, over reacted

At the end of the day the police have to make calculated enducated decisions. As in life, they are not always as simple as we would like to think.

Do people always break up with someone who cheats on them.
Do all people in violent relationships report them
Do all members of the public who witness a crime help or report it

All pretty simple no brainers to me, but to many not such easy decisions, or the wrong ones are made.

Now I will actually read the story, them come back and eat my words

Just out of interest, I got one for you...

A crime is reported of an occurance of violence or theft, the criminal has left on a motorcycle.
A few mins later he is spotted riding along.
The police car following flashes but he fails to stop.
Knowing he is armed and in a violent state of mind, and may repeat offend...

Do you give chase to the motorcycle?

Report of anyone with an assault rifle should be taken seriously. An AK47 is a very capable weapon in either 7.62 or 5.56(Chinese) forms.

On fully auto the it will empty its mag in seconds and literally spray rounds in all directions some of which will travel upto a mile and still kill or maim at that distance.

Police should have been on the case straight away with armed rersponse.

If they need more armed response units then get them paid for, trained up and out there on the streets. Some senoir police and the government need to take this a bit more seriously as yet again we are bolting the stable door too late!

I keep hearing serious crime is not worse that it was two decadeas ago, i just do not believe it is the case.

No, because if the aforementioned ****** falls off and hurts himself then you are in breach of **** knows how many Home Office directives, best practice guidelines and other tosh.

I've a horrible feeling I'm right, too

Um, I think he was asking a question, not suggesting it should be OK?

What a stupid reply

It was a straight question.

What on earth makes you think I would want to carry a weapon from my post?

FWIW I don't think it is OK and IMHO should carry the same tariffe as carrying around a real weapon.

IT WAS A QUESTION - OK

It's not obvious. Before you were born you could get cap guns in toy shops. I don't even know if nowadays toyshops still sell plastic guns. So what's the penalty then? Stop being a prat please.

I apologise to David, but I still think it was a silly question to ask when we all know that it is not acceptable to even think about carrying any weapon imitation or otherwise, I lost a good mate because of someone with an irresponsible attitude to guns, I have two kids that I worry about constantly when they are out and about, therefore its a bit of a sensitive subject.

I live in Texas, and people here can't understand how an English policeman deters criminals from operating if he doesn't carry a gun.......
