Looking by the windsock it wasn't into the wind either.

The old Vickers Varsity used to do what looked like an almost vertical descent to the runway if you used full flap and pulled the power right back so that the props acted as airbrakes. You had to be sure to have enough airspeed to do the roundout and it would stop almost immediately!
