Lord of the Rings - 'cos I like that sort of thing. And before you say, I first read it about 35 years ago, a little before all the film hype ..
Wild Swans - Chang's mother's accounts of life under Mao are more chilling than 1984 because you know they're real and not fiction ...

Anything by Stuart MacBride. I "discovered" him 2 years ago and he's the funniest crime writer out there. I'd recommend any of his three books. I finished his latest and was craving for more. Just brilliant.
