I gave my parents my old TV which now must be coming up to 4 years old. They are having some problems with "bleeding" of colours at the edges, and initially it was just the picture settings, but now they are having a similar issue again with large areas of pink and green on the edge of the picture.
I can't just pop round to have a look, and trying to get my Mum to go through the settings is like trying to perform remote key-hole surgery with a blindfold on after several pints!
They have been told it "might" be that the tube needs replacing, but I think this is unlikey due to the "quality" of the set and the relatively young age.
If it is the tube, how much is it likely to cost, please?
Are there any other potential causes / explanations or remedies, please?
Thanks!

Sounds like it might have been put close to something magnetic. Speaker, or anything with a motor or large transformer in it. Seeing the shadow mask/aparture grill at the front of the tube is a very thin metal sheet, it distorts extremely easily if anything magnetic is placed near it, which causes electrons to hit the wrong colour phosphor pixels and thus screw up the colours in the affected area.
It may need degaussing to cure it, the tv should self-degauss everytime its powered up from cold - presuming the degausse coil is still functioning (Note, it may not always work not from standby - its quite notable by that it makes a large momentary thump/buzz/hum when it switches on). It may need to do several cold switch-ons to clear it if it was placed to something magnetic for some time (sometimes the degauss coil won't kick in unless the TV is stone cold. so it may need to be left off for 30mins or so).

Great, I'll suggest that. Very likely the floor standers have got too close in tha past, I did suggest they were moved away when it started, without realising the full extent. Thanks for the quick reply!

Old tv at 4 years, when your tv gets to 18 years, then it classed as old. My Finlux 25" is still going strong.
Your problem could be caused by the degauss circuit, like mentioned switch it from cold and you should hear a thump noise for a second, this will demagnetise the screen.
A good easy way to tell is to try text and see if the colours are different , generally in the corners or down the sides of the screen as its a fixed display.

Panasonic tau screens have a degauss function in the setup menu as i had one that went green/pink early on until i did this.
Years later it's at my cousins and running very well, they are top screens.
