Default Sat Nav - good and bad

Not being sexist but as a bloke I can read maps and know (just like dogs) it's better to rely on your own intuition rather than ask for directions. But I admit that I have got Sat Nav on my Nokia N73 and at times it's very useful.

However, I'm looking into getting my girlfriend a Sat Nav system, I've never looked into this before and have no idea where to start, anyone got any pointers?

I'll probably wait till after Christmas and pick up an unwanted present from fleabay unless there're any good deals to be had before then.

Thanks in advance
Clint

It comes into its own when you are in a strange town, in a people carrier full of bored kids with your missus navigating by a dog eared, out of date Road Atlas.

1. Budget?
2. UK only or Europe too?
3. Speed camera database?
4. Bluetooth HF phone capability?

And it avoids you shouting at each other, thus creating more stress in an already overstressed environment, which is usually only improved by alcohol.

Garmin, around £100 from Comet, fill your boots.

Oh you still get the rows. Satnav can be out of date, send you into rivers, navigate you to the centre of Denbighshire instead of Denbigh town. Just stuff like that for fun

Budget ? I don't know what's required yet.

Europe would b useful and speed cameras very nice.

Taffic warning via phone and route recalculation would be ideal.

(I guess I'm talking high endnow aren't I)

Thank Robert I'll havea look at Garmin.

Yep you have to keep them upto date... ours has us taking the 'next turning right through a central reservation' on the new A1 link and tells us to 'turn around' yeah right on 3 lanes of motorway

Get a big car and a Phillips Navigator map book (they are rather large).
Then Sat Nav becomes a silly bleeping irritation.

Apparently sat-nav softens your natural sense direction / instincts /memory according to a g friends girlfriend - but then she does live north london

very useful if you're on your own, and don't know where you're going. If we all go out, I rely on my wife and a map, though sometimes have the sat nav on aswell. I find the road map can useful when in a strange town, with complex junction etc

try to ensure I know roughly where I'm going (as in the town!) - but SatNav can be a godsend for the last few miles in a strange town.

I keep a garmin one in the boot just in case.Maybe used it couple of times in the year.

Still not convinced my life has improved with one.

I keep a garmin one in boat just in case . Mybe used it couple tiomes in the last 8 years - and that was pretty disasterous put teh co-ordinates in the night before a crossing half pissed up

Took my natural instincts/knowlegde not to mention time to get into port.
