personalised number plates - why?
just wondering why I have never seen anyone one just go the whole hog and paint their flippin' name on the side of the car, I mean everyone with these number plates is trying to somehow say something to other drivers, for a couple of quid you can have and say exactly what you want with a bit of paint.

Can do it even cheaper in vinyl, and you may have noticed some Subaru owners already do

Private plates IMO is fine. I have a few myself, not that I have much interest in them, as they were gifts.
But what gets stupid is people trying to make their plates say something by using desperate measure to alter fonts, spacing or screw holes.
That, IMO is pathetic.
Anyone who thinks they are clever in having fancy fonts, sizes, colours, spacing or convieniently arranged screw caps should have a few points on their license for the privilidge. I struggle to comprehend that its only the UK that even allows this illegal practice to go on. Cars in almost every other country have plates that confirm to the local rule and regulations. Why can't poeple in the UK do that? Sums up the country IMO.
I think because these feejits can't abide by the regs of standardised fonts, spacing, backings and plate sizes etc, that the whole industry of plates should be ended and the UK introduce the same system as the rest of Europe.
It's only us that allow transfers and plate selection. With many other EU countrys you register your car, you get a plate, no ifs or buts, that's it. I'm sure the UK would have been the same if it were not for the DVLA making a few quick bucks from auctioning off plates

my car now...
on the car before....
stops people knowing how old your car is! lol
no need to 'chase' new number plates either.
I don't know why ppl by 'prefix' plates with a number then three letters to either try and say something or just to have their initials, is it a poor mans way of trying to have a 'proper' private number plate?

They're sad in the extreme and seem to be the preserve of social climbers, egomaniacs and people who think sticking a non dating plate on some old shed somehow fools people into thinking it's newer than it is.
That said I'm all in favour of them as it's easier to spot people I'd like to avoid on the road, socially etc etc etc.

Here's an example of the ultimate private plate which encapsulates the very essence of owning and using one.
Private plate owners buy this or be second best forever..........

I have a "poor mans private plate" all legally spaced and lovely like...
I guess calling a private plate chavvy is a but rich coming from someone who drives a twenty grand rice rocket with gold wheels and a baked bean can for an exhaust... :cuckoo)
I bought mine, in 2001 because I wanted something that represented me across every car I own. A little something to make my car stand out from others that look a like. A little investment, that always increases in value... More importantly than all that, it's because I wanted to. I had £350 burning a hole in my pocket and decided that's what I would spend it on
An illegally spaced/fonted/screwed plate is the true mark of a genital head. Someone who thinks flouting the law just a little bit makes them look cool...Quite pathetic IMO. Especially when they come on SN and moan when they get stopped by the police for having them
I love thread repitition

This made me laugh. To the genuine private plate enthusiast of old, your cheap Irish plate is exactly what started the demise of just seeing decent private plates on vehicles.

yep, wish I'd of bought it in the mid 80's when FILs were £99

Friend of a friend has a black 360 with "134D BOY" The 1 and 3 being very close together.
You don't really need that plate on that car, but the guy has to spend his (ill gotten) money on something!

I'm talking many thousands in the late 70's - mid 80's for a 'proper' plate.
Like most things, cheapies come along and put paid to any exclusivity that might be.

Mine was a present from family for xmas 1998. My mum, sister, gran and fiance (at the time) went quarter each on it - I just wanted any 3-letter 3-number combo. Quite chuffed with the one I got, doesn't mean anything to me or any car i've had but it's unusual. (starts OOB)
I've transfered it 4 times now.
