Free Mobile Phone - Is this a scam?
I got a call the other day from 'fone angel' saying that as I had been with O2 for so long, I was entitled to a free upgrade to a Nokia 2630 (or 2 infact, as I have 2 lines). They knew all my details (name, address, etc).
Now, the contract I am on is a corporate one through my work, for which I pay only minimal line rental - I mentioned this and they said not a problem - phones are still FOC and no changes to current tarrif or billing, just that I would be extending the contract through 'fone-angel'.
2 new phones have just arrived with an accompanying letter saying that when I insert my sim in the new phone and make the first call, they get a confirmation message and the phone will be activated within the next 2 hours. (that's the bit that I find strange - what's the activation for? SIM's are already activated, should it not just be plug and play with the new handsets?)
Tried to do some research. Their website is not yet set up and according to various records, the company was incorporated end July this year.
What do you think? Scam?
Cheers

It sounds like it has been a third party that has contacted you.
What they tend to do is give you the line that you have been given - Free mobile upgrade, but in reality a lot of them actually sign you up to a new contract so you would have 2, or in your case, 4 contracts running alongside each other.
I used to work directly for Orange in the outbound sales department and these guys were the bain of my life.
If I was you I would give O2 a quick ring and see what the status of your account is.
Cheers,
Kirsty

yep I ahd the same, except they wanted to change my £5 a month up to £30 a month ...
It was also fone angel, a couple of others in the office got the same call. It's not uncommon, even land lines now have this problem as my girlfriend got caught out by them saying they were BT and she inadvertantly had a new 18 month contract. BT to be fair sorted it all out after just phone call.

Happened to our lass with orange. They called claiming they were phoning from orange but weren't. She called orange and had to get it all reversed as they'd cancelled her sim and everything. got well narkered with her too when she told them were to go.
contract was the same really but why put up with a dodgy third party when you can go straight to the operator?
5t.
