**** Navs!!!
Whilst I know that the most of the world today seems to have some gadget in their car to tell them where to go - I myself can read maps!!!
But, I have noticed that people who mount them in the middle of their window can't seem to drive properly!
I was driving on a dual carriageway the other day and the car in front of me was sitting astride both lanes and couldn't seem to make up his (yes it was a man) mind what lane he wanted to be in. Anyway, eventually the tw@t moved over and I managed to get by - and it seems the reason for his problem was that he was so intent on looking at his sat-nav, he wasn't watching the road. the nav seemed to be mounted in the centre of the wondow - albeit toward the bottom, but it was as if he was driving using the device as a central point - i.e. to him it was lined up with the centre of the road - but to everyone else - it was HIM who was in the centre of the road.
Surely, watching a route finder in your car is just as distracting as talking on your phone!

and there i was thinking I was just "being a girl" LOL. I have had so many incidents where people seem to turn that thing ON and turn their common sense OFF!
Wasn't there a case where a young girl actually drove onto railway lines! WTF - she actually came to a set of gates at night and because the damn thing was telling her to go straight over - she got out of the car, opened the gates and actually drove across train lines - straight into the path of a train. Luckily she managed to get out of the car - the car however, did not manage to get out of the way of the train!!!!

It is a known fact that women can multi-task - we can drive, whilst on the phone, having a cigarette AND do our lipstick - but still don't NEED **** nav because we can read road signs and maps all at the same time!

Worst ones are the people who fit them on the windscreen them slap bang in front of them.
Great...they can see the sat nav with ease....pity it blocks the view of the road.
If I do use mine (rarely), I fit it on the side window - its far easier to focus on and press any bottons than being miles out of reach on the windscrean. And it doesn't block the view of the road, all I have to remember is not to wind the window down

I don't know - and I don't need to know either LOL. If i have somewhere to go - I look up my current location - then find the destination I WANT - then look at roads to get me there. But at a guess - I'd go for green? However, I hate accronyms so don't actually know what an "OS" map is?

A-Z's are still produced on ifo got from OS.
And the key to a map is knowing what info its telling you. Not just road names, if your lost it stops you looking at 3/4 of the roads your not on.

maps You actually read a map while driving??
Program satnav and let it talk to you. Its not perfect, but its SOOO much safer than trying to read a map while driving.
If you have a passenger, then fine, break out the map and have some fun. Solo, its Satnav all the way.

Id agree to some extent on a daily trip round somewhere conjested like north london for example its better to use your natural intuition

The one problem I really have with my sat nav is when I can see a complex junction coming up, it's not clear which turning I need ("bear slightly right" when there are three right forks but the main road follows round to sharp left) and the map doesn't change fast enough relative to where I am on the road. Then I have to hesitate, staring at the map, going "c'mon, c'mon you ba5tard" until I can see where I need to turn. Perhaps that's what was the problem in the OP (Ordinance Post).
For those who need them to go next door in the city that they grew up in - I suggest you walk.

Driving solo through Europe at night = Satnav
TomTom mobile 6 hardly gets in the way, in fact the scoop on the bonnet blocks more of the view!

Its those very notes you should not be reading while driving. If you can memorise the whole route before you start, then so be it. However, memorising a route is totally different to map reading

I use maps when the roads aren't in my sat nav (green laning), but for work and general a to b stuff I use satnav, have it on my mobile phone. Not perfect but it gets me there!

How many times have people had to endure being behind someone who is looking for a particlar road? Crawling along for ages and slamming on the brakes at every sideroad.
If sat nav reduces that alone it is worthwhile.
Finding a particular address in an unfamiliar town is made much easier with sat nav. I still have maps though and use them to plan the route beforehand. Some addresses are quite difficult to find, even with a map. Many maps don't show one way streets as well.
I presume all you anti sat nav people stop every time you look at the map. To do otherwise would be an offence I would imagine.
Even when going somewhere familiar, I still use the sat nav as a reminder about speed cameras and known speed trap sites.
I think having it on makes me more aware of the speed limit and therefore less likely to be speeding excessively. Quite easily done with the amount of speed limits that have been reduced in recent years.
