Cool Good driving roads in Cumbria

Hi all,

Will be going to Cumbria for a wedding in a couple of weeks at the above location. Being that it's the Lake district, I'm guessing that there must be some good driving roads in the area. Anyone care to name a few routes/roads I might like to explore in Scooby?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions offered.

Hardnott and Wrynose passes in the south.
Or theres a good circular route I did last year, starting at Keswick, via Seathwaite and Honister Pass to Buttermere and back to Keswick.

Hardknott Pass - the alloy killer...

1 in 3 climb, and coming down the other side has hairpin turns which means you cant see any tarmac in front of the car...

Just be warned that we dont have many Shell stations knocking about...

Try the Shap Road A6 going out of Kendal if you can brave the one way system. A good mixture of national speed limit single and dual carriageway (no centre divider- in fact 3 lanes ie overtake both ways at some point). Stunning scenery and no speed cameras when I was there in October.

Other than that you could try the Hardknott pass (almost prefer Dave's name as above for a description of what you'll get if you're too enthusiastic) but to be honest unless you've got a small, sweet handling car that doesn't have too much power I don't see the point as you'll never be able to let rip safely.

Most of the passes are wasted on my 911 other than sightseeing- my old 205GTi another story.

Kirkstone Pass - we had this a while back... I said Hardknott and Wrynose (at least I spelt it right )

Look here for info on those two: Rural Roads - Wrynose and Hardknott Pass - Introduction

A6 Shap wouild be this one I bet: Rural Roads - A6 Shap Page 1

Kirkstone info: Kirkstone Pass

I've been up there in the Winter when The Struggle was a sheet of ice (this the road down to Ambleside from the top... hell that was fun!)

A Calibra Turbo may not be in the same league as a Scooby but I was VERY grateful for the 4x4!!!

It is and it's an awesome, mostly empty road with no speed cameras on the route I use, good visibility allowing you to keep your eyes peeled for hazards (sadly these include speed traps these days meaning you have to less concentration to spare for what's actually important). Safe speeds well in excess of double the limit would *probably* be possible if it wasn't so terribly illegal and wrong . This is a good road for a high performance, high bhp car which many of the narrower lanes aren't.
