Had them when I was at school. They are nocternal, so will scratch around and generally make lots of noise during the night. I.E don't have them where you can hear them. Also make sure you don't have a squeeky wheel as it will drive you nuts at 3 in the morning.
They always appeared to love sun flower seeds and would filter them out from the bowl and stash them in their mouths or some kind of pouch system they have.
Last of all, don't grab them by the tail if they run away as it will come off in your hand !!!

i've had several gerbils over the years. had to have one put to sleep as it was insane - it used to run around its tank and jump up and hit the top. it would do this til it was unconcious. when it cam round it would do it again.
gerbils should be kept in groups in large tanks with sand in so that they can make burrows.

that happened to me i bought Ant & Dec and 2 weeks later had 8 gerbils
gerbs sadly don't live long and are prone to breathing problems and upset tummys, and tumours usually on their tummys. one of mine broke its leg and the vet wanted to put it down. i put a matchstick and plaster on its leg for about 3 weeks and it healed and it lived for another 2 years!!!
because they are so small vets do not like operating on them but they will give them eye drops, anti biotics etc
the link from Gene Hunt is actually a good one
Best of luck

i cant have big pets like dogs as im ellergic, but this little guy makes up for it. about a year old now, and happy as can bee.

Had loads of these little guys when I was young. The're great fun and have incredibly diverse personalities.
Started with 2 in a 4ft tank and maxed out at about 22 I think
Also had one that was a complete psycho and only had half a tail so looked the part... as it turned out he wasn't such a good swimmer
I had one that used to have fits after being bitten by the yorkie we had at the time, best thing for it was to let it take its course and the little guy always came around again (was actually quite funny to watch ).
Also had my favourite come down with something (lacked energy and was generally not well looking) and, as vets generally say not worth the effort, we kept him by the fire and fed him warm milk and sugar for a couple of days and he recovered
They really only manage 18 - 30 months life because their little hearts go like the clappers all the time
They do have a bad habit of eating their off spring if you or something else disturbs them or stresses them but all in all they make brilliant little pets

I had one as a kid, and one day I took it out in the garden for a run around. It tried to craft a permanent exit, and when I grabbed it, it sank its teeth right through my finger by the side of my nail, so it's top teeth met the bottom ones.
It died a few days later, I imagine from the injuries it sustained from me bashing the vicious little ****** off my finger against a tree trunk!
oh, and it's cage stank.
HTH

Pimmo, please mate i can understand your upset and as a result pee'd off with some of the replies but dont be so touchy, chill out eh buddy.
Hectic - although i feel your infraction was unjustified you were a bit close their mate.
people (me included) took the p*** probably because it was a Gerbil.
would we have done the same if it had been the guys dog???
just a thought
