If you look up what happened in 1953 and compare that to tomorrows weather forecast, you will see the similarities.
high winds from the North combined with high tides produced a storm surge that ran down the East to South coast. When this surge hit the lower land areas near the wash, the sea found it's way inland causing devastation. It is very similar and the government would be foolish to ignore the warning signs.

I've just heard about this and am a bit worried to say the least as I have a property right on the coast in Englands most easterly village. Understand that the surge will be at its highest about 7am? Not looking forward to tomorrow morning, hope it'll all be alright

That reads like you aren't in the property at the moment ?

Fingers crossed, but I think you might find yourself filling in lots of insurance forms on Saturday

Gutted for you if you've just put in brand new carpets, plasma, filled the freezer etc

Yeah, not there at the moment. And just spent the last year and half on and off renovating. I'm hoping that the severity will be less than what is being discussed on the news.

I live at the top of a hill at one of the highest points in Nottinghamshire 80 miles from the cost.

If it gets me you're all fekked

Snow can be a problem though.

I have a few friends on the east coast so I hope it's not as bad as they fear.

Cheers

That would be Pakefield or Kessingland then. Not sure about Kessingland, but unless you own a place right on the cliff in Pakefield it should be find - it can get very rough but I don't think the village will be under any real threat there as its fairly high.

The villages around the N Norfolk Coast like Salthouse and Cley, the villages on the broads, and Great Yarmouth are a totally different issue though

Is this where I show my smugness at being situated on high ground in the Midlands?

I always knew there was a reason why my parents told me not to buy property by coasts or on flood planes.

I will seriously PMSL if these warnings turn out to be a mere lapping of waves on the toes of a tramp diping his feet in on the end of a pier

Looks like Great Yarmouth has taken a bit of a battering. Not quiet as bad as expected though by the looks of things.

Thumbs down

The environment agency will "cry wolf" so many times that when a real one comes, everyone will ignore them.

Doesn't look anywhere near as bad as predicted but the warnings had to be issued. Looks at though it peaked some 20cm lower than thought, if had been the extra then who knows?

Unless you know people in the area, you really won't have any idea how seriously flood warnings are taken, particularly in East Anglia around the coast and broads. Better to eliminate the risk to people in homes by evacuating than to put the lives of emergency services at risk rescuing them if it had been as bad as predicted.

Did make me laugh though when I switched on Sky news only to mainly see footage of the surfers!
