Been nothing but massive adverts, competitions etc etc all about the new iPhone
Is it a new revolutionary phone that is going to change the world as we know it, or is it just purely mass marketing because its Apples latest gizmo
Other than Touch Screen what does it do that say my Nokia N73 can't/doesn't do
not really interested if it can do things better etc, but is there something special about it that is causing mass hysteria everywhere ?

Crap Camera, no video, no multi-media texts, no multiple texts, hard to operate keyboard for texting, poor web browser that runs at slow speed.
It makes phone calls and plays songs, but only from itunes, and has a niffty touch screen display.
Its a marketing cool thing.
Even the gadget show said it was cool and hip but crap really.
Cheers

I thought it was to have Video ?
So its like an enhanced iPod with the ability to make phone calls and a few other features
Is it supposed to be the same sort of slimline thing as the ipods then

Simple really:
Get the letter "i"
Then add the word Phone.
then mix in gimmicky marketing and what do we get? iPhone!![Thumb](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif)
Just like the iPod....Archos were doing it years before apple even considered it. But the magic "i" made it fashionable.

Yes, the iPhone is basically Apple's take on a mobile phone. It does have some limitations, but as a first foray into the market it's not too bad.
Do I have one, Mac fanboy that I am? No, I don't, for various reasons. I don't actually use my mobile that much as it is, so I don't madly upgrade to the newest one on the block.
I do like the fact that it has a built in iPod, however I think 8GB is way to small and I'm hoping there will be a 16GB version, or an even larger one as 16GB is really to small when my current iPod is 60GB. I know, I know, I don't *have* to carry my music collection with me, but I *like* to be able to have all the music I've got with me and select whatever I want whenever I want.
Another major factor for me is that it's not released here, and so I'd have to hack it to fully unlock the device. Now that doesn't faze me, but having to pay the rather stupid data rates that Rogers charges on top of the call plan is deterring me right now. I'm hoping we'll see a plan similar to AT&T, O2 and Orange, with a decent low call volume rate with unlimited data included, that would suit me very well.
The reason for the above is that I would actually use the mobile web/email capabilities a fair bit when out and about.
Things I don't like about it? Well, some form of GPS would have been nice, wether it's the ability to use the Bluetooth capabilities of the iPhone to connect to an external Bluetooth GPS device, or having GPS built in. This combined with GoogleMaps would make for a rather nice little GPS system.
The aforementioned low capacity does irk as well, but I understand why it's not hard drive based, and one can but hope that the capacity increases.

It's a rather limited multi-function device but it is undeniably 'sexy'. The appeal is on various levels, mostly though it's the 'I've got one and you haven't' factor which is going to drive early sales.
As you say there are other phones/PDA's that do the same job but better however they have little or no credibility on 'the street'.

ok, but who above has actually used one?
My father in law came over from the states a few months back, with one, and got to say I was pretty impressed.
The GUI (Mac os x?) works really well as did the web browser. Pictures seemed pretty good considering it was only a 2mp camera and the whole things just seemed streets ahead of anything else I'd tried out.
Am i going to get one? - nope - cant justify the £35 contract with o2, dont use my phone enough. Would probably use it more as a mini pc for web browsing whilst sat in front of the TV than a phone.
Yes it hasnt got GPS, but seriously would I use it if it had?
Not sure about the video recording - Gadget show said it didnt do it, but other reviews say it now does.

Exactly:
My w880i remotely controls my HTPC. If that combined with the syncing is not integration, then I don't know what is

Yep I was keen to get one but after the gadget show review, which was quite good at demonstrating it in a real world environment now I'm not so keen. Poor camera and no video I can live with but the virtual keyboard popping on screen and obscuring form fields on a web page is poor design. And for that reason I wont be investing.....I'm out.

Used one in the states, and really dont like them.
To big, too clumsy. I can carry an SPV for functionality and an iPod for larger capacity, and less size.
Very novel, impressive to use, but would not contemplate carrying one with me.

If a phone has more connectivity then I would be surprised - 2G, 3G, 3.5G, wifi, bluetooth, infrared. Windows 5 or 6 with some of the 'touch' shells it can be handled just like an iPhone if desired. The II has GPS.
Proper keyboard, email, full web browsing, camera, video, synching across around nine or ten dimensions with a PC or Mac...
The only area where I can see the iPhone outperforming it is the memory - the Hermes is currently limited to 6gb.
The iPhone is lovely to handle and is a beautiful design - but functionally it is fairly basic.

Well, the suckers are queuing in their droves at the Apple Centre in Regent Street atm to get one.
Minimum 18 month contract only with 02 is required as well. Basically it ends up costing nearly a grand to own one. What a rip off.

It is made by Apple hence doesn't really matter if it is any good or not as the sheep will still buy it.
Shock news - a PC is just as good as a Mac - they just do things differntly not necessarily better than each other.

Its all flash and no go (ironically it doesnt support flash yet).
Yeah, it has looks and a very simple and intuitive interface but its just that, a bit meh.
When it first came out I was all "Ooo Ooo must get, must get" but after waiting through the US launch and for today to finally come around I can honestly say that I'm not overly impressed.
I'll be waiting for v2 in Feb '08 to see what added functionality it has.
