Price of Eggs

Price of Eggs
A bit of a random post!
Has anyone noticed how the price of eggs has gone up by what seems like nearly 100% over the past few months?
Used to get a decent box of 6 free range, large ones for 85-90p and now its more like £1.60+
What is going on? That sure as hell aint 2.1% inflation.

I get all mine from my neighbour who keeps and breeds free range chickens on her smallholding, she charges me a £1 per half dozen and they're awesome, far, far nicer than supermarket free range

If the price goes up much more, I'll get myself a chicken!
This is going to sound like a stupid question, but do chickens lay eggs regardless of whether there is a cockeral on the scene? Never really thought about it.
Obviously the cockeral would need to be there to get some chicks.

Global wheat stocks are at their lowest for 25 years and the price has doubled, hen's feed is mostly wheat so if the price of eggs doesn't rise to cover the cost then there won't be any eggs as the farmers will all go bust.
Expect the same to happen meat in the near future too.

We've got ten free range chickens, and the missus sells the eggs for 60p a dozen, but know i won't do a group buy price or post them out :-)

I don't think you do, a mate of mine bought 4 chicks and they just started laying eggs when they got old enough, he never had a ****, or at least he never showed it to me.

I get them from a local farm for £1.60 a dozen. Significantly better than the supermarket rubbish which always seem to have pale yolks and weak white. Golden thick yolks and healthy looking whites, although I am beginning to question the 'free-range' claim as when I called the other day they were emptying the barn and it looked a bit battery-ish to me. Maybe the ones sold on site are from the wandering free-range hens ?
