Joined a year ago, specifically asked about termination, told it was a 12 month contract after which it was a 1 month notice period.
Signed up to a joint membership
Over the past year, wife has changed jobs and taken quite a paycut, can't afford a luxury like this so cancel.
Get letter back saying it was a 3 month notice period!
Argh...

Just how are they going to get the money from you?
Cancel, tell them nicely it was one month when you signed and leave it at that. Inform your bank or cc company (however you pay) that you have a dispute with the gym and that no further payments are to be authorised.
Its not like they are really going to take you to court...unless you were daft enough to sign a contract that has a three month notice period.
