Parent's Evenings.
I had the dubious pleasure of going to a Parent's evening today for my son and daughter. Thankfully both of them are doing okay and knuckling down fairly well. All said it was a pleasant evening as I received largely good news, however it was a with a lot of trepidation and foreboding that I approached the school. Why do we always assume it will be bad news?! ( Well I do!)

Your lucky you got to see the teachers, we were there for the full two hours and got told tough luck we have run out of time, so you can't see Andrew's teacher

When i was in my first year at secondary school I decided that my Mum didn't need to go to parents evening.
Apparently when I was asked why my reply was "I've not been there long enough for them to get to know me"
Boy did I get a slap for that.....

I remember pooping myself when it was my parents evenings, although it was never bad, I was never overly naughty but enough to get noticed every now and then and when you're that young you think fighting in the playground, penny up the wall is on a par with robbery, hence the trepidation I think.
Nowadays I look forward to my kids parents evenings and thankfully come out feeling really really proud

What you SHOULD do is to ask for an out of hours appointment to meet with son's teacher after school one day.
Einstein: if paren't's evenings were run like that, some teachers wouldn't get home that night at all.

What really annoyed me about the last parents evening, is that Andrew's Teacher has 25 kids in his class, and it was a strict 10 minutes each
Now the parents evening started at 2pm and ran till 7pm, to me with the above times allocated that totals for about 4 hours worth of chats with parents, and we saw her list and she had crossed off only 15 of the kids, at 6.50 she told us it was too late to be seen for our ten minute slot
It was the last day of term and we were told that we could see her about Andrew at some point in the future if we felt it necessary
The other two kids had their slots made for the same time, that gave us a total of 30 minutes chat time, yet we were there for just over two hours
Total disorganised chaos
Alcazar, Andrew has problems, the school refuse to admit it and we get fobbed off a lot about it from the School, so for us it is really important that we get to see his teacher about how he is progressing, they also know that so palm us off and try and divert us at any opportunity to not speak to us

I love parents evening. If they do something wrong I tell the teacher that I will beat them into line, and bask in the glory of being a dad who cares enough to sort it out. If they do something right I bask in the glory of bringing up such good kids.

(Seriously though - They book an appointment system at our kids school - 10 minutes each - there are 'triplets' in my daughters class - Dad is 60 something with a toupe, buckets of money and no communication skills, mum is 20 something and of Indian persuasion with no communication skills. Triplets are 9, one is white, one is afro-carribean and one is of American Indian descent. Apparently dad bought mum the kids from America, but they are three complete *******...... They get a day with the teacher all to themselves
It recently transpired that one of their kids was trying to set up a gang to exclude one of my kids.... secret passwords and that kind of stuff, because she knew her 6 times tables and the others didn't. We had a PTA night out on the drink, and I thought in my wisdom that I would 'enlighten' them. After mucho beer I decided I would mention it... In my mind the conversation went like this
"Hi, My name is..., I'm .....'s dad. She tells me she has been having a bit of trouble in school, and from what I can find out, I think one of yours kids might be involved. Look, kids at that age can be hard to understand, so I appreciate that there might be nothing in it, but I would be really grateful if you could have a word with your kids making sure they know that excluding others isn't really that fair. If it isn't happening, then no harm done either way...now - would you like a drink?"
As it transpires, the actual conversation went something like this
Me: - "Here baldy, if your dozy slave trade kid can't behave in school, I will personally come round your house and kick the **** out of you, your bought in missus and your bought in kids. If you have to buy kids this is Gods sign to you that he doesn't really think you can manage them"
Baldy **** made a complaint about me to the board of governers

After learning under,learning with ,living next door to ,going out with ,on holiday with , related to , working with ,a teacher ,I've never met one with a full grasp on life or any common sense !!!!!!!!!

We moved ours to a private school, mainly because eldest was due to change to go to Secondary anyway, the youngest was having some issues that the existing state school (pretty good one) and middle lad went to get him ready for entrance exams and also because we could.
Anyway, the difference is big, the teachers have much smaller groups so much more one to one time so they get chance to get to know the child and when you go you learn stuff the teachers at the state school dont get chance to persue, the headmaster writes a lengthy appraisal on each and every child in the school and it is handwritten, not a cut and paste job.
Now I was a sceptic but based on the feedback from the Parents Evenings I actually think it was worth doing, I dont think that we would end up waiting 2 hours and geting sent home, you turn up at your alloted time and get seen.

I used to look forward to parents evenings, turns out that filling a very outspoken teenaged girl's head with the real story on catholic history is a cast iron, guaranteed way of winding up the RE staff at an RC School
Letting them watch The Life of Brian and/or Dogma does the trick too
