woman battered to death by early release scumbag
BBC NEWS | UK | Woman killed after early release
Just beggars belief, he was inside for battering her and got early release - obviously violence is not as importnat as it used to be.
I heard on R5 live this evening about a woman who got 18 months for Tax credit fraud - you can realy see where the priorities lie with NL!
Cannot find the story on the BBC site yet
Quote"A prisoner released early as part of a government plan to reduce jail overcrowding went on to murder his girlfriend, it has emerged.
At Leeds Crown Court on Friday, Andrew Mournian, 36, pleaded guilty to battering Amanda Murphy, 47, to death.
He was released in August under the End of Custody Licence scheme after serving a sentence for battering her.
Justice Secretary Jack Straw said it was "a shameful murder" and "a huge matter of regret" that it happened. "
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
and the best bit, is this supposed to make it any better!?!
Quote
"Mr Straw was asked about the case in the House of Commons by Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Herbert.
"I hope, seeing as you want to make something of this terrible incident, you will take note of what the learned judge said in her sentencing remarks," Mr Straw said.
"The senior High Court judge, Mrs Justice Swift... said she did not believe that the defendant's early release had led to Miss Murphy's death, and she went on to say that the defendant would have carried out the attack whenever he was released."
----------------------------------------------------------------
This reads like a tragi-comedy script only it is a ******* complete tragedy, how can this fool judge say that his early release did not lead to her death - He killed her!
So she was dead meat anyway that must be a big consellation to her family and friends.... what a sh*t state this country is in...

So this is what it has come to, no room in jails, not enough forsight to see that we would need more spaces sometime back, say 10 years or so ago.
With this downright moronic attitude we might as well let all the ******* murderers, rapists, looneys, child molesters...in fact let em all out out as they are gonna reoffend anyway.

Aside from anything else, every effort should have been made to ensure that he was never able to get within 100 miles of her.
I mean if you are going to release someone early, then at least make sure his previous victim is well protected.

its just another example of the sorry sad state of affairs this country is in.
For the judge to have said that, they basically must have been able to predict what the offender was going to do. They should have protected the girlfriend.
God knows they manage to do it for current cabinet members. Clearly it is possible to protect people, after all, if that was not the case most of the current shower we have would be 6ft under.

Oh of course it doesn't make good reading - It's just that scousers comment tickled me - Probably totally inappropriate but there you go.

So don't release him then? Surely if you thought he was still a danger then not releasing him early would give
a) time to assess his mental state
b) move his would be victim
Just nuts to say ah well she was as good as dead anyway so may as well save a couple of quid by not paying for his jail time now.

A simple and effective punishment would be to tie the **** to the back bumper of a car so he is dragging behind and test the car's 0-60 times

I don't know that the Tories would be any better. Mostly, recent British governments have done nothing but downsize infrastructure, sell off contracts and facilities or sub-contract.

Paul has highlighted the fact that a man who battered his GF got 20 weeks in prison and let out on early release under the new scheme (we have no room so you can go home now thanks) and that a woman got 18 months for benefit fraud
20 weeks for battering a girlfriend
12 months for causing a non fatal RTA (from another thread on here)
18 months for benefit fraud
Utter joke
