I would say you would need to spend more than £30 for good running trainers, gym or no gym.
I would also go to a decent running shop, not your average JJB etc so that they can analyse your running style so that they fit and support your feet properly.
I think mine were aboput £60 and are Mizuno, really good, lightweight and have never given me problems. You want to be looking at makes such as these, Asics, New Balance, Saucony, not your all bling flashy Nikes IMHO.

I would also say spend over £30.
If you cant, get to a Decathlon www.decalthlon.co.uk as they have a massive sale on running shoes right now.
Took me a while to get the ones that suited me, but ended up with Nike Moto Cross + (just to disagree with the above lol)
However I would have to say Mizuno and Asics are the big boys in serious running.
I was lucky with the Nikes and of course they are + so suitable for Nike+ which has been a god send.

Decathlon is a good sports shop, there are also branches of Up and Running nationwide too, staffed by athletes.
PS - How bling are the Nikes Snaz?! What I actually meant, and should have typed, was don't go for the fashion Nikes, go for the proper running ones such as Moto Cross

Excellent trainer though, and one of the best I have run in, in the short time I have run. Even at 19 stone they offered excellent support and cushioning
Yeah Decalthlon is good expecially for those serious about sport, and not expensive either

I find my 180's excellent all rounders, but heavy on the treadmill
360's even worse lol
I would also avoid the Moire's, I hated them!
If of course you follow the Nike route. Asics are gonna be cheaper for a decent entry level running shoe.

Give you an idea of whats on offer from Nike, some of their more serious shoes are here... Nike.com
One thing I would say, the trainer is the difference between being able to run, and giving it a go. Worth spending double or triple your suggested budget, and trust me, if the shoe is right, the feeling will be like running on air.
Oh and Decathlon - MEN RUNNING SHOES

You must get your running style assesed before buying - if you over pronate, under pronate or have a neutral style makes all the difference in the shoes to buy.
I run a little bit , I'm currently using Pearl Izumi SyncroGuide for my indoor running and Salomon XA Pro 3D for trail running, however I over pronate a lot so what's good for me may not be good for you. In context: I used the Salomons 1 week broken in for a 48 hour race with no blisters at all
I buy most of my shoes from up and running, they have treadmills and analysis cameras in store:
Up and Running - running shoes, running clothing, running accessories, running shops, online running sales, running web sales

I have Nikes to run but from the "Bowerman" running series. My road shoes are Nike Air Structure Triax+ 10 and Nike Air Kutu Dual D for XC. It's worth noting your running gait can change. I originally had a pair of Air Zoom Vomero but after ~10 months of use they were crippling me. A trip to my local specialist and Triaxs now suit me. Personally, I would buy running shoes purely on comfort / fit, not colour, brand or price.

There are lots of good running shops around the country - find your local one and talk to the staff in there.
You'll probably need to spend more than £30 on a pair, but they'll be suited to your feet and the way you run, which is important to help prevent you from picking up injuries.

There's a useful article here and a 'home test' you can do to test whether you're under/over/neutral pronation. I did it myself (it gets a bit messy, lol) and decided a trip to a good sports shop was in order for the pros to take a look
