Angry Driving with mobiles!

Just been watching the news, and a government quango says new research suggests driving with a hand held mobile is WORSE than driving over the limit!!

Where did that gem of common sense come from??????????

Ill leave the phone at home but drink 5 pints and drive??? WTF?????

They are also saying using a hands free or satnav is just as bad!!!!!!!

NO ITS NOT, YOU TOOLS!!!!!! LEAVE DRIVERS ALONE!!!!!!!! Just cos we have money we are not an easy target!!!!

Young mothers whose kids are screaming and throwing toys around the inside of a car are far more dangerous than me on my mobile!!!!!

Next they will be banning loud car stereos!!!!!!!

Your thoughts please people....................................

The government really don't seem to have got the message. First a fine, then 3 points now 6 points and still I see no end of people driving and using a mobile. The only way it will change is if you actually have coppers on the roads enforcing it. You can allow the courts to give life, but if you're chances of being caught are negligable people won't pay any attention to it.

I think they are absolutely right. Using a mobile phone is extremely dangerous since it takes a good bit of your attention off your driving. That is undeniable. Texting and dialing up is considerably worse.

Speeding within reason is certainly less dangerous since at least while you are doing that you can devote all your attention to the road.

If you get caught using your mobile-you deserve all you get.

I hope they do ban loud car stereos too, totally thoughtless way to go on!

Agreed

Any telephone conversation, hands free or not - is absolutely dangerous. The hands free it is a complete red herring - Its the conversation that takes your attention, not driving with one hand on the wheel.

Are you talking speed limit or drink drive limit?

I assume its something to do with how common it is. It gets my goat as I drive 6 miles to get home from work and Ill see minimum 5+ on their phone handset in that small distance. Seems like the threat of points and fine doesnt deter people at all really.

Entirely different. Of course no one should turn around whilst drivng to sort kids out, but you can ignore it - You ar ein control. You cannot ignore a converation on the phone -it is taking a lot of your concentration. - But, realisitcally you are not going to be able to ban people from taking thier kids in the car, you can stop mobile usage.

The radio just reported that even using HANDS FREE is the same as driving whilst drunk and the Gov. also want a ban on the use of sat nav mp3 players etc whilst driving!

It's going beyond a joke!

If they want to do some useful road safety taxing, then they should have their fat lazy donut eating tax collectors out taxing all the tossers driving with no lights on in heavy fog etc... tossers

Surely there isn`t much difference between using a handsfree & talking to a passenger in the car?

They`ll be making single seater cars next

What annoys me is they introduce technology to help road safety, then decide to punish it, or remove it.

I have had several near misses from people chatting ON the phone whilst driving. So as Olly said, we need more active Policing to stop this from happening. Will it happen, who knows?

Again, entirely different. You use far more concentration when talking on the phone that face to face. Also, the person you ar etalking to will modify thier conversation depending on the situation - I.e. they will stop talking if, say you lights went out at night. The perosn on the phone does not do that.

It is entirely different.

Mobile phones are going to end up being banned altogether from being used in cars, and the sooner the better.

You cannot ignore a conversation if the person is next to you, so why doesnt it apply to passengers?????

If you are that stupid you are unable to drive using hands free you are too stupid to be driving full stop. Maybe we should ban Kids as well, I know full well my 19 month son is a lot more distracting than any conversation I have on my hands free kit. Hell why we are at it lets ban passengers altogether.

I'm all for banning steering wheels, they're far too distracting while using the phone or changing a CD over

Did you see the state of the "test subjects" the ones i saw were all women over 50.

Is that cos the results would prove what they want them to prove???

If they had used a bunch of 25 year old lads the so called "drastic" reduction in reaction times would be negligable a best!

Its not a fair test, and has been used to bully the government into a certain way of thinking!!!

The point is that the penalty already exists. Dangerous driving can be punished heavily. Using the phone while driving already carries points. It is apparent that if these points were actually dished out, that, on top of speeding points, would increase insurance and push drivers towards a ban. Then their behaviour would improve.

Like others, I see half a dozen people on the phone every time i drive. So why do the police not? It's because they have more important things to do. If HMG can't commit the resources then the crime is obviously not that serious.

This new penalty will make no difference imho

No it's window wipers which should be banned, far too distracting when they are on, the continuous back n forth motion, hypnotises you, next thing you know you're in a field in the rain having no clue how you got there!

Well look - When you have a conversation on the phone, all you have to go on is the voice. You concentrate to get as much information as you can from that voice communication.

In person you have much, much more information being thrown at you, so you dont have do concentrate so hard on the voice.

Its like the difference between radio and television, if you see what I mean.

When I speak on hands free in the car, (which I do at times when I really really have to) I know for a fact my driving gets worse. And if you think that yours doesn't, you're wrong.

If you are driving with one hand albeit on the phone, texting, a CB Radio, smoking, eating or beating the kids to a pulp you are not concentrating on driving no matter what way you dice it up.

Now you have an accident while doing any of the above you expect the law to be nice and fluffy? I think not. It's like speeding we all do it but when we get caught we go ape.

The main problem here is that we no longer have any consistantcy in our legal system. This means that for doing the above we will see the motorist being sentanced to more than some ****** breaking into houses in your neighbourhood.

The whole situation stinks but until the bulk of the public realise you have to vote these parasites out to make an effective change.

Motorists pay more tax than any other sector. Even smokers are not penalised as much. We have more motorists than ever on the roads so we are the easy target.

Until Sh1thead Brown and his cronies are removed there will be no way of improving our lot. He is borrowing more and more and someone has to shore up the deficit and that someone like it or not is us

Now some of you may think why the political angle? Well this is inexstricably linked to the cash flow problems we have in this Country. Yes the Police are using cameras to raise revenues but why is this? the Government will not give them enough money that's why. So it's no surprise Government will be looking for ways to raise more cash from the motorist.

So with this in mind use hands free but FFS vote these to55ers out at the first opportunity.
