I wasn't keen on Fuerte. Yes, less built up than PdlA in Tenerefe, but shoddy without being quaint (like Greece). Not been to GC, but from Fuerte you can see the island of La Gomera which looked nice, might be worth investigating

we went to our aunties apt in los christianos, when we fist went there we thought it was superb, now its a bit scrufffy, tbh, and thats the quieter end near the market.
we wont go back, and as you can imagne its a cheap holiday for us,
it was absolultey dead as well in june, all the shop keepers were in denial.
we wwnt to puerto del carmen, and thought that was a bit nicer and the breeze made it a little coller for the kids as well.

Go to the Meloneras part of Maspalomas, Gran Canaria. That's where all the fancy restaurants, hotels and shops are - you could spend an absolute fortune there and it's lovely and relaxing. If you desire you can work your way east into Maspalomas and then onto Playa Del Ingles. Maspalomas is fairly chav free and a nice relaxing place for families and couples (the sand dunes are quality) but Playa is pretty much a chav pit but worth going to see once during your holiday.
I'd also highly recommend you hire a car and drive around the island heading west (clockwise). Pass through Puerto Rico but stop in places like Puerto Morgan and some of the other less tourist orientated villages. The roads and scenery are simply stunning and at the north of the Island you'll get to see Las Palmas which is basically a city with very little tourism function at all. You can also head up the mountain roads into the centre of the island for some of the most exciting driving roads in the world and some spectacular views.

Hi deep,
We often get out to lanzarote during our crap winter, we stay in a villa in the "old" side of Carmen. From here everywhere is nearby as the island is a small place so you its not long before your anywhere!!
Framaras on the west coast where there is a lovely beach and plenty of surfing.
Just stay away from the traps like the strip in carmen and tiguise blanca although blanca is lovely.
if you like good sea food you have to try "el golfo" 20 mins from carmen and if you want top notch tapas/sea food try the old town in carmen.
i gave up on tenerife 10 years ago when i thought speed/coke/ganja was the main course.(good for kids as in late teens early 20,s ) or divorce's looking for a good time!

Avoid Puerto Rico if you can, lots of drunken idiots all over the place be it time share sharks/chavs or begging Africans. and it's the 1st and only place I have ever been mugged. We went back to puerto morgan which is only a few miles away and it was 10 times better
also hire a car and take a trip into the mountains well worth it
