No not in this country.
I was at the border between southern Tunisia and Libya during last week.
I wondered why there were dozens of people lining the road selling plastic containers.
The guide told us that as petrol is very expensive in Tunisia at 1.200DT/litre (about 40 pence), the Berber people of the south go across the border to Libya where they can buy petrol at the equivalent of 2p per litre. They bring it over the border to sell. Illegal anywhere else in the country but as southern Tunisia is so poor, the government allow them to do this only in that one specific area.
I also found out that in Libya, the people don't pay any taxes at all, they also get free electricity and phone.
I always thought Gadaffi was a dictator who oppresses his people. It just goes to show you can't believe everything the press tell you.
Anyway, during my time in the Sahara, I was told, the last time they had rain was seven years ago. I was so lucky to see a torrential downpour that lasted three days. "Water is life" they kept telling me. A holiday in the sun is what I went for.
