How did they pay you - onto the switch card? Bank transfer, cash?!

I'm looking to sell mine to a garage, but really want to get rid on the day, not have to wait ages to sort out the money etc and go back!

Has anyone done this? Did you get a fair price?

Got a cheque last time did it.

Got just over the book price but only because it had extras and low mileage on it

I sold my last Impreza to a main dealer, they paid by cheque and it was a fair price.
Quite an easy transaction really, they even picked the car up.

Paying by cheque isnt really ideal as I wouldn't want to release the car until the funds had cleared obviously!

Is it 3 working days to clear a cheque these days?

Sometimes it can be 5 days... the official line is to allow 5 days

So did you agree on the price with the garage, pay in the cheque, give them the V5, and then go back to them with the car 5 days later?

If you are selling to a reputable dealer you have nothing to worry about having a cheque and giving them the car I have done it a couple of times they will not rip you off. You could ask for a bankers draft or a direct money transfer but each will still take a couple of days to clear as will a chargeback to your debit card, the only instant thing is cash and they won't do that {unless it is only a small amount of money}

Sold my Forester to a VW main dealer and got a bank transfer from them next day. A franchised dealer won't rip you off.

I have sold two cars to dealers.. First one was for £1800 and was paid in cash, second was £2000 and paid by cheque. Left the car with them. End of the day they weren't going to do a runner from their garage so would know where to find them if the cheque didn't clear.

First time they gave me a lift from the garage home in my old car, second time I walked!

I sold my Clio 182 Cup to a Renault dealer who paid me by business cheque. They paid me £300 more than I was advertising it on Autotrader and I got to refund £100 worth of road tax!

But even main dealers can go bust. If that happens, guess who gets your money!

Direct transfer, cash or bankers draft before they get the car - many 'big name' dealers have gone bust in the past after all. If that kills the deal then retain the V5/dont sign over till funds are cleared. D

Went to a couple of dealers today - 2 of them didn't have anyone there who could give a price, but for the third did, and the bloke bit my arm off when I said what I was looking for for the car, and came out with some stuff about how he had to do the deal now as they were about to buy stock in etc..

To me it said I can get a fair bit more for the car than I was expecting, so will try a few other garages next week!

No garage will give you a Cheque and wait till it clears for you to deliver the car.
All the dealers in the country would be broke in ten minutes if they did that.

You will just have to trust the dealer for the cheque to clear.
you can ask for a draft but again most dealers wouldn't want to get involved in the hassle of going to the bank to sort it out.

Very true. But the risk that it will happen is probably very small though. In any case wouldn't the car you sold revert to the owner as the contract wasn't completed?

Ideally yes, but if the receiver has their name on a V5, guess what will happen...

I sold my RS4 to a dealer and insisted on a B Soc cheque and gave him plenty of time to sort that. I'd have been mad to risk losing so much money otherwise on 'trust'.

People lost thousands on sofas with Courts for example...
