Has any one any suggestions on this or has any one already done it ?
What I want to do is say I have all my music on my pc but I want to stream it via wifi to a different room or rooms and perhaps different music to different rooms and even video if possible and have some sort of remote that will work in the different rooms

I have the sonos system, its great, stream all of your music into (upto) 32 rooms or zones, stream out to Napster (or similar) and listen to hundreds of internet radio stations. Very flexible it works over wireles or Cat 5E, I cabled mine, but that's what my business does anyway
Very easy to set up.
You can do one room for about £530.00 to start which includes the controller. you can then add extra rooms for about £250 a time dependant on whether you are using the amplified version or not

Not sure, the link i posted should tell you everything, i doubt it's as you can only 'broadcast' what iTunes is playing, it's only 50 quid though

The AirTunes feature in iTunes/Airport will play the same track to all of the available AirTunes "stations", so no, you cannot have a different track playing in different rooms.

Cheap 2nd hand PCs with wireless cards will do the trick... set up iTunes on them and store the files on the main PC. All the others will be able to access the library and play seperate whatever tracks/videos you want.
Doesn't stream it though but you could use remote desktop to control the other PCs from the main PC and select the tracks you want played in each of the rooms.
I have PCs in the lounge, kitchen, office and bedrooms running this way - I run my own design business so fortunately I tend to have a few older machines kicking around that I use but most companies sell off their machines once they're 3 years old or more... my previous company used to sell them to employees for 50 quid each - depending on where you work, it might be worth speaking to your IT department (take some tea and Jaffa cakes, always seems to do the trick!)

Try the Squeezebox duet, similar idea to Sonos but a fraction of the price. I want the Sonos myself, but its not worth the £1k cost to me, Duet is £280 plus about £99 per room and has the Ipod style controller

I looked into this and being a tight-***, went for a slightly cheaper compromise. I bought a basic mp3 player and mini hifi with aux inputs for each room I wanted. The music isnt located centrally or streamed, so you will need to update each mp3 player when you add more tunes, but it worked out at well under £100 per room.

I stream to several rooms with a pinnacle soundbridge. Wireless, only about £40 now, and a different track in every room equipped with one

bit extreme, but i put a wired network in my house
42 rj45 ports spread around the place connecting my two computers (one in the lounge and one on the study acting as server) with router etc connected in the garage.
i use the network to get my surround sound for the lounge tv to the other side of the room with no cables (including the sub) and can distribute music all over the place with what i have already done (only cost for each room would be a few bits from Maplin, a couple of speakers and 20mins in the shed with a soldering iron)
...but i'd go wireless if i were you - saves tearing your house apart. as said elsewhere, get another pc with a network card and stream from machine to machine
