Louis Theroux Behind Bars
Anybody see this last night?
Louis spent 2 weeks at San Quentin, California. As with most of his interviews, kind of weird, kind of informative. Fortunately it wasn't plagued by the current, annoying trend in TV to remind you every 5 minutes what you're watching!

Yup, really good programme.
If you ever needed any evidence why just locking people up in prison without any form of rehabilitation programme doesn't work then this was it.

It was funny how Louis didn't ask any of his usual probing, disingenuous questions when talking to the hardcore psychopaths, rapists and murderers.
Still a great programme however and I found it startling that an actual building can exude a sense of evil. Can't help thinking that place must make bad people with bad intentions behave even more badly.

Yup good programme. I find the american system odd, how does sentencing a man to 521 years and 11 consecutive life sentences provide any sort of motivation. The guy seemed fairly well educated and accepting of his situ.
God forbid that gang culture becomes entrenched in UK life.

Did anyone else get the impression that that transgender 'thing' just commited crime so he could get back in the poky to be someone's cissy ?
Also, although he interviewed a couple of blacks, he didn't hang with the home boys like he did with the white supremecist gang. I wonder if the brother collective just refused to entertain him?
Certainly looked like a grim place to be if you'd never been around those type of people.

Anyone else notice how so many of the chaps in there rarely admitted to anything - it was 'I got done or committed for this' rather than 'I did this and that'... They admitted things they were jailed for - crimes that they were not proven on they were very non-committal.
And the chap who read the bible session in the Yard before the shots were fired - reckon he was a kiddy fiddler, and if anyone deserved a good kicking, it was him

i thought the guard stroking his rifle more worrying than some of the inmates!
'do you shot to disable or kill?'
'disable' 'with my special bullets' yeah, right! course you do mate
think louis shat himself a bit when he was heckled out of the yard. can't say i'd be too happy being there myself though! deffo kiddie fiddlers though those bible bashers
i thought the attitude of the guards was spot on, respectful enough of the inmates to keep the peace, but pretty obvious they wouldn't take any crap.
what a bloody hellhole though, think you'll realise you've hit rock bottom if you ended up there. even the guy getting out expected to be shot at!

Thought this show was pretty good , the big 21 year old black guy who was in for 50 years - life ,and thought he was innocent. Can't imagine being locked up for that length of time. A couple of scary moments when the whole vibe of the place seemed to go very hostile. A scary place with even scarier people, although had to laugh at the Gay jewish guy who had an ex **** -white supremacist gang boyfriend.

I bet the programme barely scratched the surface of what goes on in there!!
Lets face it, you wouldnt let a team of yanks come over and film whatever fights and the like they wanted in Durham Jail would you!

LOL - never forget a massively large US producer telling me when I questioned the repetition in a programme : "Tell me, tell me again, then tell me what you told me". LOL. Soooo anyoying! OK doc, but not that engaging. Good access though - I am SO paying my parking fines from now on. D
