Default MTB - Disc brake maintenance

This weeks MTB question

Thanks for the advice on puncture repair. I took a spare tube and pump with me and used it this week so it worked ok. Ta

I rode through a VERY muddy field; didn't get a puncture - however I did manage to get the tyre off the rim and then puncture the tube. In the process of fixing the resultant mess one of my brake pads dropped out. Now to the question.

Can I just pop it back in, or do I need to bleed the system (hope not)

TIA

You should be able to pop the pads back in - as long as nothing else dropped out!

I'd be more worried how it dropped out!!!! There is usually a pin or a bolt through both pads and the claiper to keep them where there supposed to be!!!

I think it dropped out as I had the bike upside down to get the wheel in.

My Hope 4-pots have their pads held in with split pins, which I've replaced with stainless ones I found via a yacht chandler.

They shouldnt be held in by gravity alone!! So long as didnt pop the piston out you should just need to prise them back and refit the pad.

Warning to MTBers - do any loop the loops, your brakes might not work afterwards

Brendan,

You don't need brakes when there are trees to grab hold of! (eh, Chris? - My arm has just about healed up now)

I think they're Avid Juicy 3 hydraulic discs with G2 Clean Sweep

I've got one of these

I have the same brakes on my RHopper, there's no pin or bolt as such. The pads are held together with a little spring, this then get's pushed into the caliper until it clicks into place. Just be careful you don't mash up the metal spring, I'm guessing it will still be attached the the pad that is in the caliper.

I think (fingers crossed) the other pad is still in, I'll have a look when I get home tonight.

Thanks for the help

Mogsi

Thanks for the .pdf Very helpful.

Popped the pad back in can't seem to see the spring though. From the .pdf it looks to be a piece of bent wire and not the shiny metal clip that you see when you look at the top of the caliper?

My pads are now rubbing when I turn the wheel, so I'm guessing I've lost this clip. Heyho time to buy some new pads
