Salary - Standby+Callout Employees
Hi guys, after a bit of advice really.......
I work 37.5 hrs a week 7am-3pm monday to friday. There are 3 of us in our department who specialise in the same field. There is now a requirement to work a 24/7, 365day support which means we are going to renegotiate our contracts and obviously salary.
Our boss wants us to submit a plan on how to cover this and what we would expect payment wise.
We have no idea without ''market research'' on what is the norm and what to charge. We dont want to go in too low and obviously we dont want to take the ****.
It would be 1 in every 3 weeks where we would be on standby, and we would do our 7-3 monday to friday in office as usual.
We are fairly satisfied with a 1.5x hrly rate overtime if we are called out but what about the standby charge?? What do we put forward?
What does your company pay you standby wise? (After your normal employment hours)

Do it on an hourly rate, at Woolworths I got I think about 1.35 an hour for call out plus £10 per call, plus the time at time and half apart from Sundays that was double, at the Police it was better, I think it was £235 per week extra.
Don't have to do it anymore, though I have just got an extra laptop so I can check on stuff (Databases), mainly so if I forget something and wake in a cold sweat I can jump on and sort it out.
I remember us being told by a manager that callout for us was "Money for old Rope" but a colleague put her straight and asked her if her House insurance was money for old rope as thats what it is, insurance.
Go for at least 200 quid a week as its apain in the ****, we werent meant to drink or stray far from home.

I used to work for a major IT company.
When on call there you got 0.25/hour when on call irrespective of whether you got called out. If you did it was standard 1.5/hour weekdays and saturday per hour, 2/ hour sundays, and 3/hour bank holidays with a day off on in lieu.
the figures are based on 1 = normal hourly rate
help it helps

My firm pays £140 per week for callout (so £20/day) and obviously if you have to do anything its paid at time x 1.5 or x 2 on Sundays. Thats for people on salaries ranging from about £25k-£65k.

My company (multinational) pays its technicians £1600 for availability 1-in-3 call-out (base salary ceiling £35k), this works out at 1/4 of the payment for permanent nights.

When i was a service and Instalation engineer,on call out i used to make about 1k extra a month.
£160 a week for being on call,and £20 per call weekdays,antyhing over 45 miles or after Midnight and it doubled.Average 3 call outs a night,over 5 nights.
Then saturday it was £40 per call out and i was only engineer on call,so i could make easily £300 on a saturday.
Sunday worked out about £55 a callout, but was pretty quiet.Unless i had a job in Scotland then had to travel to yorkshire.i could be out on 1 call out for 6 hours and only get paid the basic callout rate.
It does mess with your social life, and i hated it coming round.
Now i dont do callouts as part of a company split,i do not miss it one bit,but do miss the cash.

There are 5 of us in a team of 9 who do 24/7 support. So for doing 1 in every 5 weeks we get an extra 12% of our salary as a flat rate every month. For that we only do severity 1 and 2 calls as well, can't just be called for anything. We also have an hour or so to respond so do not have to be tied to be at home at weekends/evenings.

Hmm, I am being pestered by my manager to go 24/7 split between 2 of us, so that's 26 weeks of cover at least not taking into account if one of us goes on holiday which i could do a whole month on-call. We would get paid £20 during the week and then £40 for each weekend day plus overtime charged at double time to the nearest 15 minutes.
Do you reckon i should ask for more money on top of all this. I don't want to do this but he always get's his way. I've just started a family and want to enjoy my free time with them after work/weekends.

Do you know how much the company is making by offering 24/7? And what about Christmas Day< Many companies offer no service at all this day unless its a life threatening scenario [hospitals/gas supplies/etc.].

nothing for being on call, and then if we do get called out, we have to fight tooth and nail to get any kind of payment, the MD is the only person I know who has superglue in his wallet

Bank holidays paid at x2 time and a day off in lieu to be taken at standby teams discretion at a later date.
Remember the Health & Safety requirement for breaks, i.e. if you're called in at 3AM and work for 3 hours you should have (I think) a 6 hour break before returning to work again. So being on call may mean that at time, if called out, you are unavailable for standard shifts.

Major IT co.
Is either £25/week night or £40/weekend night or £200/week depending on the criticality of the system, if we are actually called then double time from the time of the call to resolution including travel time. Most guys earning £35-£45k basic.
Have to say that I wouldn't do it again, did it for a wee while but life is too short.

We cover 6pm - 8am for 7 nights in a row, 1 week in 4, alternating between acting as the primary contact (tend to average out at getting called approx once per week) and secondary contact (pretty rare to be contacted)
£180 per week for secondary week, £320 for primary.
Charge rate varies between 1xtime , 1.5xtime and 2x time depending on the time you get called.
Charge in 1hour blocks, 1hour minimum.
IT/Telecom software company.
Is a PITA as you need to carry your mobile with you and to be able to logon using laptop/wireless card within 30 mins or so.
Depending on when you are called and for what length of time, you may be able to take some/all of the following day off.
