Default Company Car tax

After some advice from you guys...

The missus has been running a company car now for a year. My question is, if you do no personal mileage and you work from home, ie she does not have to commute to work, so no benefit there. Do you actually have to pay any tax on it? My assumption would be no as she is only using it for work, so no benefit gained. She uses my car when she goes shopping etc...

Any help appreciated as I can't find anybody in the same situation.

Cheers

Yeah, she's now realised her ways and is giving it up, although that does mean i'll probably have to buy her a car.......

If she does no personal mileage - and as you say doesn't drive it to her normal place of work - and only uses it for business (eg, visit clients). Then you shouldn't have to pay tax. Basically, you're saying there is no private use whatsoever. You will need support from her employer - see here, top of page 1, 2nd column

Thanks James, they were my thoughts, just wanted to check I wasn't in a different world! She keeps records of all her mileage, so maybe thats what we'll do to prove the case.

Anybody else in a similar situation?

Cheers

That sheet made interesting reading.

As a thought can she no opt out of the company car and ahve an allowance instead, this is taxed as income but it provides a benefit you could use {ie financial} to get another personal car to run?

From memory a company car is classed as such if: it's available for use for company business, it's available for private use, you don't own it.

Remove any one of those and it's no longer a company car. Sound's like she shouldn;t be paying tax on it.

Some companies register the car in your name but they pay for the finance. hence it's not a company car. Oh, how I miss my Siemens 'company' car
