Interesting. With some development and maybe the implementation of common rail and piezo technology they may get good enough performance for it to go into an Impreza. I'd love to see an STiD with 450 lb/ft making 50+mpg

Probably due to them not implementing the common rail/piezo injector technology. VAG engines are very good in this area but could be better. The PD (Pumpe Düse) engines were developed to be near identical to common rail, but different enough to avoid patent and licensing issues with the inventors. VAG have since realised that CR is the better technology and the next generation of their engines will be common rail piezo units. For an introductory unit I think they are showing promise.

the crappy 2.0 Petrol NA is 15.5k, so the diesel will no doubt be even more putting it in 2.0 170bhp seat leon FR territory.

Sounds like a great engine, and the car isnt a five pinter either

Not sure if they are still as good nowadays, but my STi V's reliability was legendary - NOTHING went wrong in 5 years and that included a fair few track days (other than front wheel bearings, which I forgive).

Nice one Scoobaru!

CR seems to be more popular now - but as far as i can gather from having a mondeo estate tdci if i wanted easy safe tuning direct injection tddi would have been the way to go ..

Love the comment about how sales have been disappointing for Subaru in 2007. Well with the new Impreza IMO being one of the mistakes ever made by a car company I expect 2007 will seem wonderful in comparison to what 2008 will bring

The new impreza wont have classic fans rushing to buy it but it opens it up to a huge new market. I think this years sales wont be half bad tbh.

Down on the bhp, equal on the torque

What market? Those that want an ugly hatchback full of poor quality plastic with a stupid 4wd system, weird engine and class losing fuel consumption - yeah they will be queueing out of the doors for that

But what is this diesel stuff that people are talking about? Is it some sort of oil?

Mega-Tuner potential: I wonder if any parts of the crank/block are interchaagable with the petrol counter-parts? Being a diesel block and crank, it's going to be a shed load stronger than the feeble componenets the petrol engines have. It could be the basis of a very reliable high bhp petrol engine.

In its current form: 8.5 sec 0-62mph is pretty good for a 150bhp diesel legacy.

Especially seeing the 2.5litre n/a Petrol does it a snail like 9.3 seconds, despite it having 160bhp

(proof if anything, that torque is more important than BHP )

This makes my choice for my next car a bit difficult.

I run an '02 Legacy Estate doing about 25K miles per year so I was looking forward to the diesel's arrival. However, all petrol Legacies (apart from the 3.0) are now automatic. A 2.5 SEn with LPG conversion was looking like a good bet. However - 49mpg and that performance from the diesel are very tempting.

I think the Evo is your perfect new Impreza - well apart from the lower reliability, worse mpg, boring engine and similarly crap plastic interior. It does have a less 'stupid' AWD system though, and I love mine as much as my STi V. I guess you must have a Porsche though with its gorgeous £80k Trabant interior LOL
