Grass seed question...
For the green fingered out there
We have a patch of what can best be described as mud where a outdoor wendy house lived.
When do we put the seeds down to cover in the patch?

You need a warm shed, greenhouse or attic and UV li....oh, er sorry, wrong grass.....
You should be ok from this point onwards, grass isn't really that fussy. Although I might be tempted to hold out til next month. The only issue is ground frost and lots of rain washing the seeds away.
Just make sure the area is raked into loose soil, seeds sown and topsoil put on to cover them, can mix a spot of lawn fertiliser in with the top soil if you want to make it grow bit quicker. And keep everything off the area until its established, and mow once its at least 2" long and firmly rooted into the soil (otherwise the mower will pull it out by the roots).

Did my whole back lawn last year, I would wait until the spring - grass will hardly grow when its this cold ( which is why you dont need to mow your garden every week in the winter ) and if the ground gets waterlogged from heavy rain they will just rot.
In the spring you will get a decent covering of grass in about two weeks, which will then thicken up over the summer if you keep it cut regularly.

There are different types of grass you can get as well - if it is for the kids to play on, look for some that is sold as 'tough grass' - it doesnt look quite as nice as ornamental grass, but will hold up a lot better.
Turfing is an option on smaller areas, but our back garden would have cost around £3000 to turf and prepare, doing it myself cost around £300, which included hiring a rotovator ( top machine ! ) all the seed and the fertiliser. Plus you get a better sense of satisfaction when you look out and see your new lawn and know that you did it yourself.

March-April ish.
Buy a bloody great net to put over the patch otherwise the birds eat half of the seed (or all of it), and put on 3-5 times as much seed as they recommend. That's my experience. Shoots poke through after 8-9 days. I was advised not to fertilise for 3-4 mths at least, it burns the young grass.
