a speed camera detector will NEVER pick up a police car (VASCAR) following you !!

....reason being they are timing you over a certain distance NOT using a 'gun' to check your speed.

I think you need to try using the rear view mirror ;o)

The detector was banned but you can still get GPS ones that have camera locations and hotspots.

As above, just use your mirror..... They need min of 1/4 mile

Not quite true they threatened to ban the detectors but the legislation ran out of time before it was enacted due to the last election. They've threatened to bring it back but as far as I know they haven't yet.

Not too important anyway as 1) the GPS based ones will still be OK, 2) the laser detectors don't detect until you're already nicked and 3) if they're following you then it's vascar and as above no detector will help.

Detectors are still legal......as Chelspeed says, the road dsafety act banned them, but that part of it was never enacted (other parts were like the increase from 3 to 6 pts for failing to ID a driver)

I the "good old days" before speedcams and Vascar etc. they always had to follow you for at least 3/10ths of a mile measuring your speed with thier own calibrated speedometer. A much more accurate way too when compared to laser cams etc.

Consequently we all learned to pay good attention to what was in your rear view mirror. Its a good habit which never leaves you once you get used to it.

And also look out for small white squares painted on the road.
They are usually near a good vantage point (for a police car) and they fix a laser onto the white square as you drive over it.
Then they can read your speed, and nick you further up the road.

Slightly different I know, but I've just been stung for "speeding" at 61kph in a school zone (Australia). $636 fine plus 8 points on my license. Normally the highway is rated at 60kph, but during school days, it's rated at 40kph at certain times. The only problem is, there is no way the motorist can tell, while driving, if it is actually a school day, only that the zone is there and the times it applies.

That seems very unfair and I would even say illegal.

Laser jammers work, but they are illegal.
